Appearance
Iwo Jima has black hair and brown eyes like Japan. She's 5ft '2in tall and wears a yellow kimono that has large sleeves and a purple undershirt and sash. She also is usually wearing military boots that are hidden by her kimono. Given that the island itself is unusually flat and featureless for a volcanic island, she has a flat chest and rather plain figure. Her most prominent feature is Mt. Suribachi, named after a Japanese grinding bowl, and is featured in her black hair, which is naturally curved upwards at the sides of her face. She owns a complete military uniform, but hasn't worn it in years.
History
Iwo Jima's finding date is so far unknown, but was given her name Iwo Jima, literally meaning Sulfur Island, supposedly by Captain James Cook during his third surveying voyage. She was administered as Iojima village and has been a part of Tokyo to this day. A census in 1943 (before she became a military island) reported an island civilian population of 1018 (533 males, 485 females) in 192 households in six settlements. The island had a primary school, a Shinto shrine, and a single police officer; the island was serviced by a mail ship from Haha-jima once a month, as well as a Nippon Yusen ship once every couple of months. Her economy relied on fishing, sugarcane farming, and sulfur mining. Given her poor economic prospect, Iwo Jima had to import all rice and consumer goods from the Home Islands.
However, even before the beginning of World War II, there was a garrison of the Imperial Japanese Navy at the southern part of Iwo Jima. It was off-limits to the island's civilian population, who already had little contact with the naval personnel, except for trade purposes. In July of 1994, due to anticipation of a possible US invasion, the entire civilization population was forcibly evacuated from the island, and no civilians have settled there since. The US invasion of Iwo Jima began February 19, 1945, and continued until March 16, 1945. She was occupied by US forces since then until 1968, when she was returned to Japan.
Today, she still serves as a military island for Japan and America.
Personality
Iwo Jima is normally a rather social girl, always trying to make friends with those around her. She's very soft spoken, and will try to avoid saying anything that she thinks might upset those around her. Because of this, she's very subconscious of herself, and usually doesn't share what she's really feeling, usually trying to hide her feelings behind a smile. Like her brother Japan, she seems to have a love for anime and manga. She also enjoys being at high altitudes, and loves flying in planes. In fact, she taught herself how to fly a plane during World War 2. What brings her most joy, of course, is being able to help others around her. Sadly, she suffers from low self-esteem due to… certain events… and doesn't hold herself in high regard. Although, don't expect her to say anything about it. Despite the fact she's a military island, she has a phobia of fights and arguments, and will usually prefer non-violent solutions to issues.
