Brett clutched a laminated slip of cardboard in his hand as he tapped his foot on the wet, tiled floor. He had telephoned the strawberry blonde a couple days prior to this day and as agreed, he waited in a small town café to initiate an evening of caffeinated beverages, mild exercise and cliché chit-chat. Triple checking to make sure the location he was at matched the scribbles he created on Blair's business card, he began switching from looking at his salt-stained high tops to the time on his watch.
His watch said he was fashionably early by 5 minutes.
4 minutes...
3 minutes...
2 minutes...
1 minute.

And as the seconds ticked down, like clockwork, the New Englander appeared, briskly walking as to not startle the other pedestrians but the tardy redhead was certainly not as composed as she could have been based upon her frazzled expression. "Brett!" she chirped, giving a wave as she came to an abrupt halt in front of him, cellphone in hand, checking the time with a slight scowl.
"Damn, a whole minute late," Blair lamented, readjusting her bag on her shoulder. Upon collecting herself, she stood straighter and smoothed the back of her hair where loose curls took the place of her naturally wavy hair, flashing him a guilty little smile. "Sorry, I botched up the train in Vancouver and ended up in Surrey. That's one mistake I never want to make again."

Slowly getting up and subtly striding into the lineup, the British Columbian replied, "Dude. you're 60 seconds late; don't beat yourself up about it." He gently nudged the freckled cutie in front of him. "I could have easily picked you up from Surrey if you called, but putting that aside I'm glad you could make it. You appear slightly disoriented yet..." Brett reorganized his thoughts and finished,
"Poised?"
He shuffled with the line.

At his nudge, she shrugged gently and flashed him a smile. "I could've but I didn't want to come off as a helpless tourist. But, to prevent future mishap," the Bay Stater paused and reached for his hand, giving it a squeeze "I'll stick with you. Seems like my best option."
Eyeing the queue, she fell into step beside him before addressing his next remark with a chuckle. "It's a date, isn't it? Being disoriented but faking poise is all part of the experience."

"Well if you insist..." Brett jokingly groaned.
He puffed up his jacket collar and stepped back. Taking the east-coaster's hand, he got down on one knee and ever so delicately lifted it to his lips.
"My lady."
Whatever Blair's reaction was, Brett didn't have the satisfaction of seeing it. The people in front of them were done ordering and what they saw in front of them was simply two slightly amused, slightly confused baristas. They raised their eyebrows at the duo but were kind enough to excuse them of any embarrassment. "Next" one giggled.

The moment the British Columbian hit his knees, Blair tossed all hope of being composed on this date out the window. She had met some bold fellas in life but this was an entirely new definition of bold in how playful and innocent the gesture was on the exterior. For the fleeting seconds they did have in the privacy of that moment, the American gazed down at him quizzically, as if she was trying to guess what Brett might do next. She wasn't necessarily embarrassed but the tops of her ears burned softly when she did realize that she was unsure of how to properly react. For all the New Englander knew, it was quite possible that this was normal in Canadian courting and her silence was out of place.
Thankfully, the giggle of one of the baristas relieved her from over-thinking the gesture any further while she offered her other hand to help him to his feet. Once the brunet was upright again, Blair made motion that she'd order first just to give her companion a couple extra seconds to reorient. She strode to the counter and offered the pair on the other side a polite smile before ordering what was likely close enough to her usual order of a lightly sweetened hazelnut coffee from her local coffee chain. "4.50, miss," the barista chirped and watched the foreigner thumb through her currency before handing her a crisp, light blue note. Despite the redhead's solid efforts to blend, her accent, mannerisms, and the red 'B' keychain on her bag for the Red Sox had definitely given her away. Handing her change, the cashier motioned to the other half of the duo with a smile, "Next, please."

He composed himself and grinned into a quiet cough as he waited for the register. He used the snippet of time that was reserved for Ms.Winthrop ordering her beverage to analyze through his actions in his head. His head thought what he had done was to some extent sly and enticing but, like most things, seconded guessed the gesture. Maybe it was too forward, a bit distasteful? Beginning to realize that the action had also earned him many glances and grins across the shoppe, his hands semi-consciously dove into his pockets and his eyes on his feet. Its not like he wasn't used to doing things of this nature in public, he just wasn't used to doing it with, primarily, an American, and secondarily, a New Englander. Hell he was surprised that an American from the east even considered hanging out with him, but to his fortune, one actually did.
"Next , please." a cashier chirped, pulling the Canadian out of his thoughts. She gave him a friendly look and despite having material to use against him, didn't. He took a couple moments to order and while she whipped up a medium late, he asked the barista a couple questions about the sustainability and fair trade agreements of their coffee beans. Slightly pleased and thanking the lady for her time, he paid the amount asked for and placed a toonie in the tip bowl. "Have a nice day!" he rang while walking over to and opening the door for Blair.
The air was heavy and wet. Mist had began to set and visibility was poor. Thankfully for them they only needed to walk to a park or trail as opposed to drive across the bustling city. Being more-than-aware of the behaviour of this weather Brett pulled a touque out of his jacket pocket and pulled it on his head. It drooped over itself and hung behind his head as the duo walked along a surprisingly empty sidewalk.
"Hazelnut eh?"

Upon receiving her order from the barista, the redhead waited a few feet off to the side, mindful of the queue and anyone who cared to wander through the café but also remained close enough that she could hear the majority of the two Canadians’ conversation. Once she realized the topic of their discussion, Blair couldn’t help but shake her head and smile out of amusement. She had placed Brett as the kind of guy who shopped farmer’s markets, owned earthware bowls, and fancied the success of hydrogen powered cars so that was a big checklist on her laundry list of predictions regarding her companion’s character. The New Englander had left room for surprise as well but nothing which had included the brunet showing any great deal of PDA. Well, that was a strike against her good judgment of character. Then was a good moment to stir from her thoughts when he wordlessly lead her towards the front of the shop and out, onto the misty streets.
A familiar chill danced across the skin her cardigan failed to cover and reminded her of spring in Boston on an overcast day. The moisture would rise from the harbor and blanket everything from the ground, up in thick, cool vapors. She may have been across the continent and over a border but little had changed aside from the flags and accents. “Wicked nice day,” she mused before realizing he had said something as well. Something about hazelnut? “Oh, right. Hazelnuts are great for the skin, help with concentration, and promote fertili-“
The New Englander about slapped herself right then and there. She knew she had a habit of spouting information when her nerves acted up but a lecture on the fertility benefits of hazelnuts really wasn’t going to win her friendship points her. She gazed at the British Columbian with a sincerely apologetic look, finally giving him the satisfaction of seeing her somewhat frazzled and faintly embarrassed look he would have viewed in the café given another second.
“Sorry, force of habit,” she confessed, “I’m used to keeping Cris for company. He usually either contributes or distracts himself with flirting across the crowd with strangers… which I’m glad you haven’t done yet but I won’t hold ya back if they’re really cute and you’re confident you can score their number.” And, just to make a point, she playfully elbowed him with a slight smirk.

Little did she know that "the fertility benefits of hazelnuts" wouldn't actually be a bad place to start. Grinning at her small mishap Brett quickly replied, "Although I didn't have any intentions on attending a hazelnut lecture I wouldn't mind hearing about the evolution of the hazelnut. You seem to know plenty on the topic and if you're open to sharing some useful DIYs or health tricks then I'm down for it." He shot her an understanding smile and hoped he wasn't pressuring an unwanted conversation about protein-packed snacks as he hopped to the left at the next intersection. Alberta was also a health...nut and he was used to sharing information with her about thats in season and how to effectively use them.
Queued by the elbowing he took a pause, unknowing of what to reply with. Deciding on a sweet light approach, he retorted "I'm sure I won't see anyone half as cute as you my dear..." Pulling out the laminated paper he was fiddling with at the shoppe he finished "Plus I already have your number." Brett playfully winked and slowly stopped as they waited to cross the rainbow-coloured crosswalk . "Cris is quite the flamboyant type." he grinned while looking to the petite lady for a response.

(( bless /w\ I was thinking about how cute it was a couple days ago and realized why it came to a stand-still oops ))
The redhead watched her companion curiously for a moment before tittering at his response. “Perhaps another time. I believe the evolution of the hazelnut is more of a third date topic,” she added with a light shrug. Already, Blair felt admittedly more at ease based upon how Brett shouldered her quirky, know-it-all side. Her fingers twitched at her side as she wondered if she could snag his hand again but she pushed away the thought. No reason to be clingy.
But what the New Englander hadn’t expected was to see her number, scrawled down in her own handwriting, laminated. Curiously, she reached for the business card and held it between her index finger and thumb, studying it quizzically before returning it to the brunet wordlessly. This boy was difficult to peg. His casual demeanor intrigued her, yet made her simultaneously a bit wary and unsure she could keep pace. It was a legitimate concern, of course. Verging on 400 years or so, Blair Winthrop wasn’t quite of the same walk of life, and, rather comically, the immortal Statesian worried about her youth. For the moment, the American grew so wrapped up in her thoughts that she about walked directly into traffic but the flashy sidewalk startled her from her thoughts and back onto the curb.
“You’re quite flamboyant yourself,” she jeered, meeting his gaze with another quizzical look. “In your own way, I suppose. Cris is undeniably looking for attention but that head of flippy hair and set of lines hasn’t gone unnoticed, Mr. Williams.”

Brett was almost about to take her shoulder and yank the American back from the street if she hadn't already done the same thing mentally. Calming down at what he thought would be a disaster, he listened to her speak and thought a little. Thought about Cris and Blair and the way "flamboyant" seems to roll off the tounge while also sounding like "flamable boy" which was a bit concerning. He lifted his chin up and spoke with a faint smile, eyes drooping and nose towards the thick vapour of the morning. "Oh indubitably, these inherited carpets of shame are probably big enough to qualify as tourist attractions don'tcha know... though, I'm not the only one with a unique set of hair." he finished, slightly glancing towards her face. The ginger's vivid mane was something that always caught his eye, in comparison to the chest-nutty, even almost muddy(?) colour of his own. In fact, most of the PNW had inherited darker hair colours so when he saw the natural strawberry-blonde style of Blair's demeanour, he slowly grew very attached to it. "Like an orange peel, or a thick varnished cedar cabinet..." nuzzling his chin back to his chest. As if he didn't think he had said enough, cluelessly continued, "It's very nice, your hair."
The little illuminated man shone on the yellow pedestrian traffic box indicating it was safe to cross, and the "young" couple crossed with the company of few other people. Everyone seemed to be at home, avoiding the hair carnage that was misty days, however the two didn't seem to mind. A little more mindless wandering and they'd find themselves a park sooner or later.

"Rhody!" the redhead chirped cheerfully over the tall cardboard box in her arms, flashing a half-grin at the smallest New Englander. Not expecting company at the time, the Bay Stater had taken the opportunity to begin to pack her car for the retreat the New Englanders had tentatively planned for Memorial Day weekend. "Hold on," Blair murmured, raising her left leg and gently shifting the weight of the box there before setting it on the ground, sheepishly grinning. "Ya know, there's this thing called a phone in which you can let me know ahead of time that you're coming. I was just about to eat supper. Ya hungry?"

She shook her head, very used to the calloused speech of the Rhode Islander so the sarcasm did little to phase her. Without bothering to answer first, the New Englander began to usher her guest inside. "Linguine, and not the whole-wheat, vegan kind that Monty keeps trying to force on us. There should be beer in the fridge too for the Sox game later."

The Bay Stater snorted, grinning in amusement nonetheless at the comment indirectly at her neighbor's expense. As a whole, New England was a pretty tolerant and progressive collection of old farts but Vermont had a knack for pushing the envelope. It was about the point that she announced that she was a gender-fluid vegan with a green-thumb that the region agreed collectively to no longer question the Green Mountain state's preferences. Whole-wheat pasta and strange vegan cookies which somehow tasted like pink lemonade were a small price to pay in the long-run. Speaking of those cookies, there was a plate of them sitting on the dining table that Blair really hoped the Rhode Islander would recognize just so he'd take them off her hands. She plucked two bottles of beer from the fridge and set them on the table, retreating to dish-up two plates of pasta so they could catch up over dinner.
"Are you coming up to South Hampton this week?" The redhead quirked a brow, spearing a little piece of scallop and popping it in her mouth. "I figured the beach would be more of your thing than camping near the Berkshires like we did last year."

He sat down at her table. Still looking around her house, getting used to his surroundings. She had moved a few things around since the last time, or just got new furniture. Either way, it was a bit different.
"South Hampton? I'm not sure yet. I might." He shrugged. He enjoy's leaving his state, but being around many others was not really his thing.

It was errand day for the redhead and being stopped had not been in her plans. Initially, she planned to shrug the stranger's hand off and give him a piece of her mind about hassling her, but upon looking over her shoulder and seeing quite the attractive foreigner, Blair held her tongue. Descup--- 'I'm sorry.' Her intermediate Spanish speaking skills could get her through this. "Te ayudare. Where are you trying to go?" she replied, turning to face him.

As soon as the brunette began to explain his situation, she mentally ticked through his accent, his predicament, and paused to gaze at his face once more, feeling that she was missing something very obvious. His face struck a chord with her, like she had seen it before and it was the face of someone very important but she just couldn't place him. One thing was for sure though-- he was not one of her own citizens if he was able to get lost in suburbia. "Un poco. Aprendi español de un amigo. Lo siento pero- Where exactly are you from? He was dressed in a business attire, and was confused by why he was here. "...I am from Spain, you know the little country under France? France being under England?" He said giving a half smile hoping she knew where Spain was. He heard from his friends that a stereotypical American was pretty stupid, but he didn't believe such think and actually wanted to see if it's true. The last question hit him, he heard it before...that tone...that voice...wtf deja vu yo. (( It just means you're rare and special. uvu Oh my goodness, I've been to Valencia! *A* God, it was so beauuutiful. You lucky duck. ))
The hesitation of the Spaniard didn't bode well in her mind. Was she speaking too fast? Or maybe with too thick of an accent? It was always difficult to tell whether she was coherent to someone foreign to the Northeastern US. Blair opened her mouth to repeat what she had asked in a slower fashion but was cut off by Antonio who proceeded to explain the geography of his country in terms meant for children. "Yes, right next to Portugal and Andorra," she quipped, attempting to not seem too irritated that he'd dumb down his explanation for her. She was Massachusetts, the kind of state who found studies like engineering and biotechnology to be child's play, after all. Despite her sore ego, the redhead could not help but sympathize with the brunette. Abroad and disoriented with a headache-- the Bay State gently touched his arm and motioned towards a bench, out of the way of pedestrians. "Look, if you're from Spain, you're wicked out of place. This is Northeastern America, about an hour outside of Boston. Do you have family here, or are you on a business trip?" She gestured to his clothes, attempting to place him still.

"I honestly, have no idea how I got here....all I remember is that once upon a time I was at home, drinking some hot chocolate....then...the phone--" He sat upright and blinked. These questions would irritate her for the rest of the day. Of course, she didn't have very long to dwell on the predicament of not knowing his identity when his zealous voice startled her out of her stupor. The redhead lurched from her seat, unable to follow his sitting and standing patterns. "Christ, if it was from Pa, it had to be--" Suddenly, she froze, realization dawning on her. The spaniard was holding his head when the other had took a hold on him roughly. He blinked with his eyes widened a bit in confusion and fear "E-España!!!-- or...Antonio Fernandez--" He said looking with confusion eyes at her but then the name just hit him. "Wait.....Blair???" He nearly fell to his knees in joy. He smiled brightly "Blair...." Sparkles everywhere weeeeeee-- He shook his head and then coughed clearing his voice. "I've seen you before..and unfortunately I must have been drunk or something because I couldn't get an exactly clear image of you." He sighed and blushed in embarrassment "Therefore....I must have came here with England to a party or something I don't remember all that well-- but were you by any chance at a party last night?"

(( Are you living abroad? And oh god no. I read and write it decently but no where near being fluent. Pardon my godawful Spanish in advance. ))
The New Englander resisted the urge to whack herself upside the head. No wonder why his name had been practically on the tip of her tongue. Nodding, she settled on the bench beside him once again, unsure whether the arrangement would last with such an excitable man. "Of course I was there. I was the hostess," she added with a grin. It probably did not make a lot of sense to those who were outside of New England or England but the annual celebration of their close relationship was a huge event with plenty of scholars, business personnel, and Anglo-Saxons alike. Of course, Antonio attending as Arthur's plus-one was curious but based upon the drunkenness of the Spaniard and many of the other guests, it seemed like the celebration, regardless of the reason, had been a success. "Does England know you're stumbling around with a hang-over?"
