kay bert, this is how you join and submit to groups on deviantart.
on the top left corner, there will be an arrow that is pointing down. click that arrow and you will see many categories.
click on the word "groups" which has a pic of a house next to it.
in the search box (says "search groups"), type in photography or whatever you want, maybe something specific like "nature photography" or "animal photography". (I'll usually search "labyrinth" or "twincest")
click on the group that interests you, (I don't think you should get the groups that have those AWESOME quality shots, they might not except your pics because yours not "high quality")
once you find the group that you want to join, click on it. then click on "join group" which is on the left side, you might need to scroll down.
after that submit the request (you do not need to type anything).
you probably have to wait a few mins/hrs/days/weeks for your invite to be accepted. sometimes the groups will automatically accept your invite as soon as you submit.
once you are accepted, go to the gallery and there will be plus signs next to the categorys (example: animals, nature, blah, crap, people. this way the photos are organized).
click on the plus sign next to any catergory that is similar to your photo. click on the pic you want to submit (DO NOT SUBMIT ALL AT ONCE! SOME GROUPS MAY ONLY LET YOU SUBMIT ONCE A DAY, ONCE A WEEK, ONCE A MONTH. READ THE GROUPS INFORMATION TO SEE HOW MANY YOU CAN SUBMIT!!)
After you submit, you will have a message in your inbox saying that your art is waiting to be approved. you can either delete that message or keep it. I sometimes keep mine so I know when it gets accepted.
once yours get accepted, everybody in the group will see your work.
PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT WORKS THAT YOU THINK IS THE BEST!

the pixs HAVE to be 50x50 px or you won't be able to upload it on deviantart.
adjust the speed tow/e you want it
after that, press the upload button
it'll show you the finished icon.
right click and click "save image as...."
then go to deviantart and go to ur profile, click on your icon, and then click on "change avatar"
find ur icon, it's most likely in your "downloads" file.
