Mostly apathy, with rare moments of impassioned joy when playing. Melancholy when thinking of his past. Overall his demeanor is lonely and forlorn, savoring what little happiness in life he has left.

He'd probably show a fairly blank expression most of the time, as he's a master of concealing his emotions in public. This 'mask' tends to slip once he gets into some music, though.

This made me smile, not least because I'm trying to work out if Nono is sitting on the tender or the engine is hyper-efficient (or perhaps fired by fire magicite, which would make an exceptionally clean fuel source with energy density vastly superior to any known combustible source).
I also wonder if Nono has told Hurdy where the brake lever is, or if he's conveniently forgotten to mention it...
π: 0 β©: 1
Jonatan In reply to Beacon515L [2012-01-01 16:28:44 +0000 UTC]
It's actually based off of my (soon to be modified) Wilesco traction engine, fired by Esbit fuel pellets. Though, I don't have a Hurdy doll to ride on the timber wagon.
I also doubt Magicite burns very well... this is coal country, son

Beacon515L In reply to Jonatan [2012-01-02 12:13:13 +0000 UTC]
Ah now, but consider that any steam engine does not require a fire, that is, a combustion reaction to take place within the firebox; they merely require a source of sufficient heat of any description. Some stationary boilers are fired by such exotic things as geothermal heat; why wouldn't Magicite, a clean-burning and reasonably abundant fuel source (being in a world of magick) be ideal?
As for a passenger, I can't find Hurdy, but... [link]

Think of the coal!

Beacon515L In reply to Jonatan [2012-01-02 21:44:14 +0000 UTC]
Tell me, good sir, in all your travels through Ivalice, did you ever actually see an operational coal mine? What makes you think there is any actual coal economy in Ivalice? If coal is unavailable, we engineers must look to alternative fuel sources.
π: 0 β©: 1
Jonatan In reply to Beacon515L [2012-01-02 22:30:21 +0000 UTC]
Well... the sage knowledge states:
"With the discovery and harnessing of electricity, it was suddenly possible to operate devices of a far larger scale than ever before conceived. However, the vast quantity of solid fuel required to generate electrical power, and the development of methods to artificially condense Mist, led to the latter supplanting the former as the dominant usable energy source in Ivalice. Only the most energy-hungry devices still use electricity today."
To me, this "solid fuel" must mean coal, because wood wouldn't have the heat energy and soon all of Ivalice would be barren with Vieras crying like babies over their trees being gone.
π: 0 β©: 1
Beacon515L In reply to Jonatan [2012-01-03 10:09:46 +0000 UTC]
Well I never suggested that Ivalician engineers have attempted to use Magicite in place of solid fuel yet, with the possible exception of airships, where it would add the benefit of obviating the weight of the fuel. Also, these efforts to 'artificially condense Mist' sound exactly like what I'm talking about. I would expect the 'energy-hungry devices' line indicates that Magicite's principal weakness is low instantaneous yield; that is, it can't burn as fast or as hot as coal, relegating its use to relatively smaller engines.
I do hear you though, which is why when one of my characters in my fanfic retrofits an old scrappy boiler to fire off Magicite it is seen as equal parts crude and revolutionary (and later catastrophic).

Jonatan In reply to Beacon515L [2012-01-03 10:49:50 +0000 UTC]
Magicite and Nethicite is Ivalice's take on nuclear power. The disaster at Nabudis is proof of this, it is in direct relation to Hiroshima. So your character would pretty much build a nuclear boiler... and without cooling I can understand what happened. XD
I still doubt Magicite can burn, it is after all just basic rock containing magick energy. But then again there could always be Magicite in a coal seam that could mean some of it became embedded in the coal itself.
Then you have to figure in that the existance of coal is imperative to the steel industry (and all armor, airships and machinery nessecitate one), the manufacture of iron and steel would require coal. If not underground coal then charcoal... but that would again affect the trees.

Beacon515L In reply to Jonatan [2012-01-03 13:08:09 +0000 UTC]
My character is the son of a nuclear physicist and no idiot when it comes to engineering. Of course the boiler is cooled, with steam-powered injectors much like those you might find on a conventional steam locomotive (on which the design of the boiler overall is largely based, other than being water-tube rather than fire-tube). He even implemented a failsafe which releases all boiler pressure into the cylinders while opening a separate set of cylinder cocks leading to the firebox, draining all the tender water in it (basically an elaborate fire extinguisher). The problems arose when a saboteur cut off the supply of tender water and additionally did some harmonic resonance hanky-panky which increased the output of the Magicite firing it, the results of which I leave to your capable imagination.
I should probably point out that this boiler is located directly under the Great Cathedral of Rabanastre, being that the steam primarily drives the 15HP blower mechanism of the pipe organ (the playing of which is my character's second occupation, after maintaining it). It is not an especially large boiler, but the arrangement of the tender and exhaust mechanisms, which feed into and are fed by Rabanastre's sewer system, does permit it an unintended secondary use as a high-pressure harmonic oscillator. At low pressure, it's a high-powered foghorn. At operating pressure, it causes minor tremors and some flooding in the lower city. Anything much higher... and you see in it that for which the saboteur was looking.
Magicite doesn't need to burn! The exothermic reaction it produces is not combustion, it simply releases its stored magickal energy as clean heat. It doesn't actually have to combust to do that. As I was saying before, heat is the imperative in a thermodynamic engine, not combustion, albeit that is one easy way of getting heat.
And here you do make a very good point, although we don't see too many ore refineries around Ivalice, do we? Makes you wonder where it gets done. Perhaps somewhere in the Archadian wilderness?
