The only advice I'll give you [based on my personal experience] is stick out college/foundation/degree, and do as much work for your portfolio as you possibly can, then some more (lol)... the more you have the better, even if not that much goes in the final folio. Plus the more you do the better you get...
And me...? Well having faffed about for 10 years since leaving school (god is it really that long!! haha I'm getting old!), I got to the point where I couldn't stand PA work anymore, having started off doing a bit of secretarial temp work to fill in until I got myself sorted and got a piece of paper saying I was capable of being a graphic designer (my only true ambition, decided at age 12-13 but got a bit sidetracked lol (as I am now!)).
Anyway long story short kids happened, which made me take a good look at myself and my future, and I am now MD of my own design company, as I realised I could never work for someone else again! And I am absolutely loving it, it's not like work to me either, which makes it even better!
However, I am going to stop waffling on now or I'll be here for the rest of the night! Plus I have work to do lol
