What's Bona Fide Chimp?We live in an era where majority of the people live in heavy populated areas whether it be small towns or big cities. Think about all the buildings, people, noises… we sort of live in a concrete jungle. Think about it a little bit more and you’ll realize you’re like a primate living that jungle…. you are a Bona Fide Chimp.
Bona Fide Chimp is a clothing brand created for anyone who lives in an urban environment and created to express the urban lifestyle, experience, and culture. The goal is to inspire you creatively and to build a positive culture with Bona Fide Chimp.
Who is the creator behind it and how did it all start?
My name is Ernesto( the original Bona Fide Chimp) and I grew up in the big city of Chicago. I grew up in a large 4 apartment complex building where we had relatives living in each of the four apartments. I have many memories here, one of them being the neighborhoods and how they always seemed so alive. Growing up in these neighborhoods with my brother and cousins are some of the best moments I’ve ever had in my life. My parents later purchased a home not too far away and this is where I have lived all my life.
I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly growing up in an urban environment. From having a great time hanging out with friends and family to having frightening moments like being up close in gun shootings. I didn’t let the environment hold me back with what I wanted to accomplish in life.
As soon as I graduated from high school, I wanted to go to college to major in what I was most passionate in….art. So at age 23, I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design. I’ve jumped through several ideas over what was the next thing I wanted to accomplish in life. That’s when it hit me, I wanted to build my own clothing line that represents the urban lifestyle. The challenge is that there are many brands out there that express an urban lifestyle, but many of them don’t really make a positive impact.
As I was brainstorming ideas, I thought about how my brother and I always called each other primate nicknames. Throughout my life my brother used to call me “orangutan” for my long reach and “chimp” because I looked like one (you be the judge), etc. In return I used to call him a silver back gorilla because of his size. That’s when I realized that these primate nicknames really played a huge role in my life and that it is a part of me.
So I thought to myself, ‘how can I use a primate name to express an urban lifestyle that people can relate.’ Surely then after I knew Chimp was the word I wanted to use, but I couldn’t just use that name alone. I wanted to add something that communicates “this is who I am”. So originally I wanted to use the word genuine, but it just didn’t sound right. I brainstormed more and finally the word bona fide popped up in my mind. Bona Fide is a latin word that means In good faith. It also means genuine, authentic…… real. That is how I discovered Bona Fide Chimp.
