I've always enjoyed your art in DWM, so stumbling upon your Scratchman art here on Deviantart, and then going on to see everything else in one place, has been an absolute joy!Β

Hi. Would you be interested in collaborating on a Doctor Who fan project? Totally non-commercial, of course, as I've no intention of upsetting the BBC. You'd get points for your effort tho! Please look at [link] for details. Thanks for your time.

i fight with the kids here. people say "there is no right way" to do art things. but if someone wants to be a professional illustrator, you need that right?

or should all of us let the young teens learn how to shade, have color theroy, have lighting by themself, or by school or other people who are blunt?

because on this site, you can be called a bully for saying "Oh, did you know, you don't shade with black? if you are doing people, try a purple or blue...brown ish color"

it's called "cramping their style" and hindering their creativity.

or should people like me take that clue and ignore anything and I just need a good agent. and not worry about correct perspective, layout and all that jazz?

BrianAW In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-06-26 16:48:11 +0000 UTC]

True - but it's less important what something looks like than how it works. It can look like anything you like, as long as it's consistent. Even the Lion King characters are based on correct anatomy - they did the research and adapted the look as they saw fit - but only after doing the hard graft of getting to know how the real animals work. There's a video online somewhere of Disney artists drawing a deer from life, preparing to design Bambi. Times change, computers make it easier to do the research, but here's no getting around the fact that, if you're serious about it, at some point the work/research has to get done

[link] if i drew wolves like this, in a portfolio or resume. i can still be a professional, good artist right? and be super respected too.

BrianAW In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-07-02 11:55:53 +0000 UTC]

Hey, they look great, good job. You've done your own thing, but followed the "rules" too. (Heads at the front, legs at each corner, etc

As for the respect thing, don't worry about it too much. I was talking with some friends about freelancing the other night and we all agreed that we'd had to develop a thick skin to get us through the gazillion rejections we'd all had.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuwaizair In reply to BrianAW [2012-07-03 00:51:05 +0000 UTC]

i mean if I want to be a professional and i have my portfolio loooking as such. and like if you wrote a book about a wolf. do you want it looking like that?

because being like a harsh teacher results in many deaths.

then i wonder if I should adopt their mentlaity and tell off anyone.

like if i submit a porfiolio tomorrow of only what I have on my DA (i am lazy and take crooked photos) and send it to Wizards of the Coast with hopes of illustrating MtG cards.

BrianAW In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-07-07 18:57:55 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the market you're aiming at, I think - if you were asked to illustrate a field guide to spotting wolves in the wild then that might not work so well, but if it was fiction that style could work fine.

As for criticism - I try to be open-minded enough to take the constructive stuff on board and strong-willed enough to rise above the rest without comment. Responding to rude people in kind is just a waste of your time and energy - don't give them the satisfaction

Kuwaizair In reply to BrianAW [2012-07-07 22:04:58 +0000 UTC]

a serious fantasy story. and they need big hair. serious like, "the story has war, and a character who betray the good guys" a story where even good guys die.

not something that is supposed to be silly

or fantasy like wolf's rain. but they look like something that would be in a girly cartoon.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BrianAW In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-07-08 20:05:18 +0000 UTC]

I think the style is less important than the storytelling - if you look at things like MAUS, the drawing is cartoony, but the story is about the Holocaust. As long as you keep the look consistent throughout you should be okay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

BrianAW In reply to Kuwaizair [2012-06-25 15:32:50 +0000 UTC]

My own take on that is that it's important to at least know what the "rules" are so that when you break them you can do so with enough confidence that no one's going to think you've just made a mistake.

In the same vein, if an artist has enough of a grounding in composition, perspective etc then they'll be able to convey the idea of a building, say, in their work. People think they know what buildings look like, so if you can convince them that you know your stuff with the things they're familiar with they're much more likely buy into your idea of what a dragon, or whatever, looks like.

I guess I'd have to say that the rules are important. If you know what they are you're still free to ignore them and just wing it sometimes. But if you don't know your stuff then you don't really have a choice but to jump and hope serendipity steps in

Kuwaizair In reply to BrianAW [2012-06-25 23:16:28 +0000 UTC]

what about the idea of "cartoons don't need anatomy". because, you know. those Lion King lions really looked nothing like lions and even the silly cartoons have no porportions.
a cartoon wolf can look like a husky-chiwuawuah right?
