Hey, I'm looking to get in to your field...that is, someday I wish to work in either the animation, comic book or video game industry (all three if possible 
Any advise on what kinds of things to put in one's portfolio?
Also, I saw you commented for someone to check out the Nickelodeon website earlier...where, exactly, can you find the link that'll tell you how to contact them for a job? I can't find it anywhere on the site!

Since Nickelodeon is owned by Viacom, you have to job search at the corporate site:

Each studio can explain their portfolio guidelines, but here's an inside tip - never send Disney characters to Disney, or Nick characters to Nick, etc. They already draw them better than anybody, so it's an uphill battle. Do your own animal characters and make them VERY expressive - i.e., not just standing there, but jumping, laughing, etc. Best of luck.

Quick answer - draw all the time and take classes - no one learns in a vacuum. You can call up places like Nickelodeon (check their website for contact info) and request a test. They will send you a packet asking you to draw storyboards or characters for one of their shows. A test can take a week to finish. If you pass the drawing test, that's no guarantee that they are hiring, but you'll get a better sense of exactly what the job requires. Good luck!
