It's quite addictive. Need to fill in empty space? Fill it WITH MACHINES > purpose and function don't matter, as long as there is more MACHINE

I've noticed this with spacecraft design, too. I much prefer the crazy-busy surface of say a Death Star, Millenium Falcon, or Star Destroyer to a sleek & featureless shell.

It's eye candy. Stimulating and interesting to look at, gives stuff a sense of purpose even if it's a fictional object that could not conceivably work in real life. Every time I see a drawing of something like that, I can spend ages thinking what every pipe and joint and hydraulic bit might do..
