Hello! It was in fact been some time. And I know what else you're thinking about, and our little project is still ongoing. I've just run into a bit of busywork combined with writer's block. I think one contributes to the other. But I have the broad outline of the next chapter in place and just need to fill it in, hopefully soon-ish. Stay tuned!

Okay, it's up! Feel free to start off on the cliff-hanger I left, take up with the other part of the crew, or follow the other alien's (I tried to imply that it had done some good old binary fission, without making a solid commitment or hitting the reader across the fave) progress through the ship.

Anyways, haven't heard from you in a while, and as usual thank-you for your patience. I sincerely hope this finds you well. Merry Christmas!

It’s good to see the next chapter of SLC up. I like that our critter is now able to divide and conquer, which makes sense given that Traz has an autonomous piece of it in a jar now. A jar Traz seems to be increasingly fascinated by. That all creates some good possibilities and the potential for a false sense of security for our bumbling crew.

Hope your holidays have been enjoyable and restful as well. I’ll start brainstorming the next chapter, which hopefully will make its way up sooner rather than later.

It's true, I have been a bit reclusive. Sorry about that. I ebb and flow sometimes, not to come off as too flighty. But all is well on my end, if a tad busy here and there. Did see the chapter, nice job writing it so quickly.

Haha, I can't say the same vice-versa. I've been aware of the fact that you and jdstevens (now nicknamed "The Pope") have been writing a story together here on DA for quite some time now.

Hey, it's going. Sorry I haven't gotten out the intro to our new idea. I've got part of it down and the rest outlined, but I've gotten sidetracked a bit by other things. I hope to have it finished in the near future.

Not at all, I quite like the idea. My delay has been availability much more than motivation, but I'll manage to get some sort of final product soon.

I like the interactions between Sleuth and Ayo. Ayo’s name is also a good touch. A Kichi seems like a natural companion to a Yathi moreso than some of the others, considering both races have questionably aggressive morals from a human perspective. Another good thing is that Ayo and Sara are just about the only Yathi, I think they’re better as a small minority than a significant percentage of the population, which are probably more Humans, Ufu, and Kichi. The little opportune tickle is a nice foreshadow of things to come as well.

The portions with Jack and Sara are good, and jive with the next idea I have. I’m planning out the two of them working on the ship a little, which might slot in just before this entry.

For reasons that elude me, mo Notes aren't working, and I can't maintain chains. They seem to delete themselves. So, I hope we can have this conversation right here, in public, for posterity! I was so pessimistic about finding someone to collab with, I didn't even have a premise in mind. But to make things interesting, and as a concession to you, as I'm the one making demands on your time, why don't  we play in your sandbox? More specifically, the setting outlined in

www.writing.com/main/interact/…

I was thinking that a multi-racial ship of vaguely defined function and with a suspiciously 'easy' and attractive crew could crash on an uncharted planet, with hilarity ensuing as people try to find a way to escape. Happy to hear modifying details!

Hmm, too bad the notes aren’t working for you. Other than experimenting with other browsers, I don’t know how to fix that. I don’t mind communicating out in the open, though.

As long as the sci-fi setting is interesting to you, I’m happy to use it more. Don’t worry too much about being accommodating to me, the important thing is crafting something interesting. Regarding the “easy and attractive crew,” that is sort of how I designed the universe. In most sci-fi/fantasy settings, humans are the average species and everyone else is an extreme variant. In the Alien’s Feather universe, humans are the unusual ones in their own way. The civilized space-faring races are all very libertine as well as tickle-focused. The humans come across as conservative prudes, wearing copious amounts of clothing and repressing their desires because of some odd morality aliens can't comprehend. "Humans..." *shrug.* The setting there was right when humans were first exploring space, so maybe some of us have loosened up and joined the party since then, or maybe not. I don’t think it’s too fanciful, in a future where disease is essentially eliminated and futuristic technology fixes physical imperfections easier than braces fix crooked teeth.

I like the Robinson Crusoe / Gilligan’s Island in space set-up. To flesh it out a little more-

The ship can be a large passenger ship, vaguely similar to an old ocean liner. Large amounts of crew and cargo are ferried across worlds, and the specifics of the number of passengers and what’s in the cargo hold can be kept imprecise. A mysterious malfunction causes the ship to drift off-course, falling out of hyperspace too close to an uncharted planet and crash landing. Due to the malfunction, no one knows the exact location of the system. The ship’s artificial intelligence can’t understand the mistake, and it’s always concerning when an AI starts to act strange.

The crashed ship, now the center of this new community, crashed in the equatorial region of a lush planet, in a tropical jungle / forest of alien flora and fauna. Some start getting to work: the engines and the hyperspace communication systems are severely damaged; others start exploring the area to see if anything is dangerous and collect food; others organize the crew and passengers (who should be in charge, the ship’s captain? Someone chosen by the group? Or can we agree on a leader at all?).

With that set-up, there are plenty of opportunities for ticklish situations: some passengers could be lovers or involved in some kind of alien group marriage: there are political frictions with organizing the survivors; seducing and/or tickling the captain could reap rewards; the AI can start experiencing desires of its own; the planet itself may have plenty of ticklish things out there for the group to encounter, etc.

I’m open to improvements or suggestions to tweak that, otherwise I think that’s a good set-up for some fun things.

I like where this is heading, and I like the idea of the wonky AI and the little touches like that. I mean, there doesn't need to be a Captain at all, right? Maybe the AI runs everything, the ship is automated, and the failure rate is almost unheard of so it''s not considered strange. I'm leaning towards that, myself. I really like everything else you've talked about. And, uh, this is forward, but it has to be asked: Would you like to write the first chapter (if you have a favourite species, you could make sure you get them in), or shall I? Due to something that's come up since I first note'd you, my internet access may be really spotty for the next two weeks, but I would be happy to write something in that time and see what you think.

Carnivore318 In reply to jdstephens2 [2018-05-11 19:39:24 +0000 UTC]

Now that you mention it, I do like the concept of a crew-less ship. The systems can be fully automated by an AI, like a driverless car on a much grander scale. It also allows for a very disorganized group once they land. There’s really no central figure for anyone to organize around, and everyone would probably do their own thing or get into small groups. The people trying to repair the ship might have to organize a bit, though.

I can write the opening chapter, that’s fine with me. Since it’s a large ship, I picture all the species will be present to some degree, whether overtly mentioned or not. There couldn’t be too many Yathi around, or they’d try to conquer the group. But Erimosi are a helpful and advanced race, Ufu are communal and get along with others. The Kichi and Giglin would be somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. And there’s always humans.

If you like, you could get started on a second chapter while I write the intro. You already have the outlines of the set-up. From there, you can pick a small cast and start them on the planet, exploring, foraging, just arguing amongst themselves… whatever. We can fix anything that might be incongruous after. They don’t have to be any characters I reference in the first chapter, there’s a whole ship full of people to use.
