I sure you can ink like that, one of the easiest most effective ways to shades is if when looking at the scream pic [link] look closely at the shading on the cape behind the girl with the knife, there are kind of little marks say several one way then the ones next to them go another way. Get different shades by using thicker and thinner pens...
