I saw that you started the Bargue drawing course. How's that going? I've started it too but I've since put it on hold until I'm done with my classes in June haha

Chaiocha In reply to midaregami [2013-05-18 15:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Well-ish! Haha. The course itself is going just fine, felt I needed to sharpen my drawing skills, and my charcoal skills. My main problem is that I don't have a suitable place to do it. I've only got a tiny room, so I can't really get back from the drawing at all. Makes it a little awkward. Ah well, making do with what I've got!

How far did you get? I'm only a couple panels in, and already finding it challenging.

midaregami In reply to Chaiocha [2013-05-20 06:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, it sounds tough having to do it in a small room but I guess it's a good thing that at least you're trying! I've only really done the first couple of panels as well but I'm hoping to do some more during the summer. Just one more month until my classes are over - freedom!

Well, best of luck for now

It's more of a steady trickle of work from my hiatus, mostly over the next few weeks. Then there's the Birth of Venus master copy I'm working on, and a few oil paintings ^^

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-03-01 22:57:29 +0000 UTC]

Oooh.. painting. Such a beautiful medium that I've never quite managed to tackle yet.

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-03-02 00:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, go for it! There's nothing quite like the feel of traditional painting

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-03-02 12:41:54 +0000 UTC]

Quite honestly I don't think I've painted 10 times in my life, I'm damn shit at it.

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-03-03 00:41:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, think of your tenth drawing in your life - was that any good? I know mine wasn't!! Everything in art is practice

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-03-03 14:39:08 +0000 UTC]

Sadly I don't have the materials, time, or motivation to practice painting. OTL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-03-03 19:16:27 +0000 UTC]

That is a big issue with traditional painting, you need a lot of stuff! Especially in oils, it gets rather expensive. T^T

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-03-03 19:24:41 +0000 UTC]

I'm not even going to tackle oils before I at least try watercolors. Those are the basics, aren't they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-03-03 21:27:32 +0000 UTC]

Watercolours are a completely different beast, I've never got on with them! If you go wrong, you go wrong. You can't really erase or cover up the mistake x.x They make some beautiful effects though. Acrylics are much more like oil paints, though I find oil paints more forgiving than acrylics.

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-03-04 21:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Sounds terrible. But I do fancy the effects.
I still think I should at least manage watercolors before trying anything else more fancy. D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-03-04 23:56:49 +0000 UTC]

They do make some stunning paintings. And super portable as well, I'll usually have watercolours with me when I'm out and about, just in case I feel the urge

But yes, I would encourage you to pick up traditional painting! There's nothing so relaxing ^^

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-04-11 20:34:23 +0000 UTC]

Late reply is late, but I did do it!
It's a wholly new field for me, but I can see it has a lot of untapped potential in my hands.

Yes! And let me know when you do, I'd love to see the results!

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-04-12 13:49:16 +0000 UTC]

Umm so far I only did one thing which wasn't just testing out how it works. It's quite bad. xD [link] What I'm most unsure about is the lining. I've considered lining things digitally and then painting over the black-and-white print.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-04-12 21:26:30 +0000 UTC]

It's not bad at all!! Though, I would avoid painting watercolours onto printer paper as it's not designed to withstand being heavily saturated with water. I'd recommend a dip pen and Indian ink. Takes a little to get use to, but really satisfying once you get there.
The other point is if you are going for a heavily lined style, be real careful to stay within the lines. Water by nature is unpredictable, so you do have to be patient with it!
Nice vibrancy to the colours though! One mistake newbies usually make is trying to lighten the colour with white, rather than using transparency - which it looks like you're doing!

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-04-13 09:58:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes, that's true, I completely forgot about that. And I suppose printing it on thicker paper wouldn't quite work out... would it? Don't get me wrong, but I love the way I do digital lines compared to traditionals.
Umm, I used a standard ink pen with standard black ink, lined after the painting. My main concern is the thickness of the lines and the.. fuzzyness.
Oh, yes, I'll have to practice that.
Thanks, the colors I bought are known to be rather vibrant. Well, I didn't use white at all, I went by a light-to-dark principle through layers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chaiocha In reply to Kagisnad [2013-04-17 20:47:27 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't quote me on it, but I imagine printer ink isn't waterproof, otherwise you'd be fine.
And I know that feeling, but in reverse haha - I like how I blend colours traditionally, and I've yet to find a suitable replacement for that digitally. Probably the main reason I don't work digitally as much as I'd like.
Indian ink is waterproof, so you can do the lines before the painting if need be.

Kagisnad In reply to Chaiocha [2013-04-21 10:40:55 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine you're right about that. Aww.
For me, it's the opposite, I've yet to learn how to properly bend them traditionally, haha.
Indian ink? I'm not sure if I can find it here...

Hmm, alright, I'll check those out! It's a shame I can't do it now though, since I've got this drawing I want to ink.. a ballpoint pen and colored pencils should do.

Haha, nice. I've never been any good with coloured pencils, but they sure are lovely.

Neither have I! Though they're the best I've been with out of most medias. xD
I seriously have to learn how to paint now though, especially since I seem to have to take an exam on it.
