# About me

Strangely, I have college degrees in anthropology and a medical field, not in art. My real art teacher, Joris Hoefnagel, died 400 years ago, but taught me by the examples he left, now housed in the Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and in European museums. From him I learned to love painting detailed watercolors of just about anything, but mostly insects, bones and orchids, which are my favorite subjects. To me, almost nothing made by humans is as fascinating as things made by evolution and nature (except for art, of course)...

Thanks for posting the drawing. I have always been intimidated by pinecones as subjects (it's that whole mathematical placement of the scales), but this reminds me to get out there and paint them.

I have never seen one of these critters in real life, but your illustration gives a notion of the mass and heaviness of this plant (though not the scent, thank goodness!). I have seen corpse lilies (amorphophallus), but they are easier for botanical gardens to grow, so they're more easily found. I want to see a live rafflesia one of these days though.

Me too but it seems like a big and unpredictable project, staying in the rainforest of Borneo for weeks or months. I've never heard of ony botanical garden managing to grow one.

I love these creatures. We're lucky enough here in my town to have a couple of species of them in our zoo aquarium, and I love watching them. They seem to just drift along majestically, and it's so easy to lose track of time standing there with them. I haven't painted a picture of one yet, but I like seeing how other people interpret and depict them, so thanks for sharing your artwork!

They are mesmerising to watch. My cousin had trouble dragging me away from them at the Melbourne Aquarium where I took my reference photos. I could watch them drifting all day. :) (Smile)
