My character creation skills back then kinda involved tracing others' works.

I'm not mad about it, in fact I'm glad my works inspired you way back then, even if it was just as a base. (Not that tracing is the best way to learn art, but everyone starts somewhere.

The student version is free, the licensed version costs money. The student version has all the features though, so it's great to use while you're learning.
Another good 3D program is Blender. It's also free and you can do a lot of the same kind of stuff with it.
