I actually specialise in wool roving for needle felting but I'm not gonna lie, it is a slower craft.
Very fun, and more exact results, but definitely something which can eat up a few evenings depending on what you're doing.
Which is honestly half the fun!
I've run a few needle felting workshops now where I've gotten a lot of feedback that it feels very therapeutic.

I think that time consuming crafts are still a lot of fun though. I've dabbled in jewelry making, and that can eat up an evening, but I enjoy the process so I think it's worth it.

Yes definitely! Not really something that you can easily make money off of, but definitely something to relax with in front of the telly (if you can multitask)
So I'd say, start off:
WHAT TO BUY:
Wool roving, a foam block, and a few cheap needle felting needles.
You will break them when you're learning, so don't only get one.
Upgrade to the Clover handle later, they are more comfortable, but they've made them so that only their inflated price needles fit
WARNING:
You will stab yourself, it will hurt
(but if you sew, you'll be familiar with that)
HOW TO START A SHAPE:
For a distinct shape, you'll need to roll the wool roving very tightly to avoid more stabbing work after.
But for your first attempt, I'd recommend buying aΒ polystyrene shape.
Not styrofoam!
The wool attaches nicely to the polystyrene, and saves on the most time consuming part.
It's why all of my first things were tiny
HOW TO START STABBING:
When you actually start stabbing, you'll want to stab the needle straight in, and straight out.
It's very thin and fragile, so no fancy flourishes or it'll snap into your thing! (maybe have a pair of tweezers handy if you want to fish it out)
HOW TO AVOID LINES:
Take a smallish tuft of wool, and fluff it up until it's in all directions and looks like you knotted your hair up.
This way, you don't have obvious lines on your work (like if you colour in in only one direction)
FINALLY:
The lovely thing about it is that it's fully customizable!
If it's too big, cut it off with scissors, too small, stab some more on.
And most of all, have fun!

You're very welcome! It's a fun, relatively cheap craft which is simple to pick up and tempting to perfectΒ
I've been felting for about... 6 years? I think.
My very first one was Gir, but I was so new that it took me HOURS!
I started wrapping the wool for his head very loosely, and when I stabbed, it got smaller
So I had to add one layer after another for ages until I got the size I wanted.

From what I've seen, it's a very versatile craft. You can make all sorts of amazing things with it.
Gir was your first one??? I think Gir looks great!
The adopts help me de-stress. I love to color, and the adopts give me a bunch of ways to have fun coloring and experiment. Sometimes, I try to stick to a theme. Other times, I try to pick a set of colors (natural colors, pastel, etc.) and try to see how many different kind of designs I can make with that.Β Β

You really can!
Although I usually say that it's more for display than throwing around a room.
You can make them rock solid if you want!
But the designs on top could still be destroyed by a misplaced piece of velcro
Then again, that's similar to knit, crochet, anything wool...

The 3D printing has been pretty fun, but weirdly the most time consuming part is fixing the flipping machine!

I've been considering getting into crocheting myself as it might add a little flexility to my felties ^^
I've already ordered some bits, and am eager to get started!
Might I ask though:
Do you ever weight your creations? (Like Majora's Mask standing up)
Where would you suggest starting? (simple characters etc)

You really should give it a shot! Β Though I warn you that once you're in, you'll be addicted
I've used wire in some of my works (mainly my larger works) for support, but I've never tried weights.
As for starting out, you just need to learn the basic stitches first (chain stitch, single crochet stitch, working in rounds, increases/decreases and maybeee a few others but those are the main ones). Β Then there are a ton of free patterns online (sites like ravelry.com) that you can practice with. Β I'd suggest looking for patterns with few pieces and simple-looking shapes first. Β It doesn't hurt to push yourself slowly to more complex projects though, because that's how you improve! Β Hope that helps!

Yes definitely thank you! Thinking I can needle felt the details, but use crochet bodies to both speed up making the main body, and have them more posable. Do you have any experienced advice as to what's good to practice with?
