I feel like asking you about a puzzle.

Imagine you're playing a game and you're in a room with 3 washing machines, with lids that can be opened and closed. Β You've told to make the number 5. Β would you know how?

that guy's avatar is really distracting

Corencio In reply to insertStupidName [2013-09-25 04:13:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, if each washing machine counted as a binary digit, with closed meaning 0 and open meaning 1, I would just open the first and last machines. No idea if that's the answer you were looking for, but that's what I've got.

Also, your comment should now be pointing to the Ghost Writer. I don't find him that distracting, really.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

insertStupidName In reply to Corencio [2013-09-25 14:53:21 +0000 UTC]

that actually is the answer I was looking for. Β I've been really unsure about my laundry room puzzle for a while now. Β I thought it was easy when I made it, but then I sent it to some of my friends and even the guy working as an computer engineer didn't make the connection to binary.

the actual puzzle is bit more complex. Β there's dryers involved too and a really concisely worded riddle. Β all the people I asked understood the other parts though.

I'm trying to be really careful about not putting too unreasonable of puzzles in my game. Β do you think it's unfair to expect normal people to make the connection between binary and the two states of open and shut (which are mentioned explicitly in the riddle)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Corencio In reply to insertStupidName [2013-09-26 04:23:58 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I'm smart!

I'm surprised the computer engineer didn't figure it out... maybe it just never occurred to him. I thought of it pretty quickly because I like binary enough for it to have stuck in my memory. The average person, though? Eeeeh... how explicitly do you lay it out for them? It could possibly be too much of a stretch. =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

insertStupidName In reply to Corencio [2013-09-26 05:30:03 +0000 UTC]

the actual puzzle:

4 dryers in pairs on the left wall (typical stacked kind so 2x2 grid), 3 washers on the right wall and a table in the middle that has "An open and shut game of checkers with 5 opposing" carved in it. Β no specific mention of binary or any alternate number systems, but the game will have mostly abstract puzzles in the beginning.

I'm considering putting it in regardless of fairness because it's the exact type the ghosts in my story should theoretically make and it'll probably be easy to get on accident, but I'm not sure if I'll lose player trust as a result.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Corencio In reply to insertStupidName [2013-09-26 06:25:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it makes sense for the story, then go for it. Maybe if they DO solve it by accident, you could have a text box explaining how it made sense, as if the player knew what they were doing the whole time. I don't know how your game is set up, but I'm imagining it as a point-and-click style adventure/puzzle game where the main character makes witty comments even if no one is around to hear him. ...So like an old-school Lucasfilm game.

Of course you could also give the player a "hint" option to add a little bit more clarification. Or less, depending on how cryptic the hint was. Argle flargle blargle.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

insertStupidName In reply to Corencio [2013-09-26 06:39:45 +0000 UTC]

actually, it's closer to myst but with consistent 90 degree turns so it's easier to navigate. Β I'm going to try to limit the hint giving for anything so I can try to make it more immersive. Β I'd rather just include a walkthrough if it's too hard for people. Β I've even been writing a narrative version of the story that I plan to include for people who like that type of thing (used to be common back in the dos era...). Β

I will be including a discussion about puzzle solving among the NPC's as a clue for the later puzzles, but that's cause those ones will be VERY unconventional in a certain way. Β if you're curious at all about that, look up "mutilated chessboard" on wikipedia and try to figure out how you would solve it if it were actually physically in front of you.

I don't know how much you know about game design, but actually determining if the player solved a puzzle by accident would be impossible, and explaining a puzzle after it's solved would annoy the players that actually did solve it.

I've been asking this to everybody: what would be fun have on a battlefield? not as in things that makes sense, just anything to have get in the way or fun to destroy.

my tactical game takes place in a pocket dimension made by wizards who "aren't historian or anything, what do you expect of us?" As such, the battlefields shouldn't make sense and should be fun to blow up.

I've had my ups and downs... in extreme doses... I've been struggling with English a lot, and I had to drop out of a play to make time for it. Not to mention all of the "real life" stuff getting in the way of my free time. It's gonna be hard for me to get used to that.

So how have YOU been, Ms. Quin? XD

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven pages.

But true that many fail in being main
his parts so scarce developed for a plot!
But still to happiness we want to flee,
so ever bearing griefs we needn't bring,
thus halting progress due for anything.
