Modern spaceflight really comes down to the basics: Is it atmosphere capable or not, and what is its overall mission profile? In the case of the GD-40 the mission profile was for a small, powerful vessel with expansion potential, which is why the GD-40 model has so much that can be added to it, even if said additions are a little hard on the eye. As long as you have a thrust chamber that is mounted along the center-line of the vessel and free movement of the maneuvering thrusters, then you will have a workable, functioning design. That model is just an extension of what we are heading towards.

Of course, I would love to build ships more like the Millennium Falcon or the Nostromo (Alien) but when it comes down to 21st Century practical engineering, the GD-40 design is pretty much the direction we are going in, and remember above all else, "form follows function" and you cannot go wrong.
