there is no "trim" tool in Illustrator, what version are you working with?

I'm working with CS3. There are several ways to crop an image in Illustrator, just depends on what you're trying to achieve.

The crop tool just sets crop marks as to what will appear if saved for the web or if printed, but it will not get rid of the artwork outside of the crop marks.

If you want to completely get rid of the artwork outside the area you crop, there are a few ways of going about it.

Set guidelines of where you want to have the area cropped, click on the eraser tool (double click on the eraser tool if you want to set a certain size,etc..), press shift and then proceed to erase above or outside the guidelines you created - Pressing shift makes the eraser follow the guidelines pretty well - IF you keep the mouse or wacom pen steady and level. Unless you have certain paths and or objects locked, it will erase everything along the path that you are creating with the eraser tool. The good thing about the eraser tool is that it closes all open paths into it's own shapes after erasing.

There's also the knife tool, which i'm not really a fan of. At least if you hold Alt down while using the tool it makes the line straight but doesn't make sure it's vertically, or horizontally straight. But something I just tried... ...OKAY, so hold Alt down and start making your knife cut, now i noticed if you keep holding Alt down and press Shift at the same time (but not before Alt) it will perfectly straighten out the line for you! So maybe it is a decent tool. The only thing that I don't like about that is you can't set exactly where you want the knife tool to start, it doesn't follow guidelines, and once you use it, you can't move the cut you made with the knife over if it's off by a hair. (unless you want to start highlighting points and nudging them over to their certain x and y coordinate)

The other option is to set guidelines to where you want the image cropped, and take the scissor tool and cut paths where the guide and paths cross, so that you get perfectly straight edges. Sure this is more tedious, but if you don't cut perfectly where they intersect, you can even go back with the direct selection tool to highlight a point and go under "transform" and make sure the points are all on the same axis (x(vertical axis) and y(horizontal axis)...get familiar with that, because if something looks off, and you want a smooth look to an image, you could click on one point, copy the x and y coordinates and paste them for the point that you want to line that up with, and it will completely, mathematically and perfectly match.).But you also should make sure each path/object that you cut, that you delete the remainder of the path/shape that you don't want to keep, and close the existing paths you do want to keep.

Hope this helped.
