hahah, the funny thing is. I remember reading somewhere that Fang was originally supposed to be a man and was a love interest for Lightning. BUt during development the romance Idea got scrapped and Fang was changed into a woman. But they didn't quite change the annoyed/flirtatious dynamic between the two. It's kind of hilarious.
Also, everytime I look at lightning or Fang I just the the vibe of, "Yeah, they're not into men at all."

I mean Square Enix can't write a good romance to begin with, but it really says something that they can lay the groundwork for great ones through sheer laziness, and then the fandom does it for them.

I don't think it was laziness that caused them to stop. I think they realized it just wasn't working.
The dynamic speaks for itself and the fact many people got this vibe shows they had something. But my guess is they weren't sure how to capitalize it. Also, this is a Mainstream japanese company in 2009. The idea of having a gay female Protagonist in a JRPG. Not likely to happen. Not an excuse, just keep that in mind.
I think that's also why lightning got so much flack. She's not your typical JRPG heroine. Kind of like Velvet Crowe from Tales of Berseria. Stoic, no nonsense, non-meek, kicks 12 kinds of ass, and a heavy queer coding in their designs and personalities.

Painful as the truth may be, you're right. We've made progress in the last 11 years (Fire Emblem, Neir Automata, Yakuza etc) but we're still gonna be waiting a long time before we get any meaningful LGBT rep out of SE in a JRPG.
And that flak was so undeserved.
All your points included, she's a JRPG protag born from the the same cloth as Cloud and Noctis in that their flaws are human, they're queer-coded but definitively shown to be among the most powerful characters in the series.
And I personally believe that Lightning is 'the most powerful' character in FF overall. She's a Godslayer!!!
I hate to say it, but if they made Lightning a guy I doubt the hate would have been as virulent.

Mhm, very true. Games in general but suprisingling Japan is starting to allow more lgbt+ representation in their media. It's still a little dodgy is some regards. But it's a step in the right direction. Hell, anime and manga have been really pushing things. With titles like: Citrus, bloom into you, yuri on Ice, after hours, and several anthology collections. Progress is a slow process and Media is a great way to showcase it.
I would say similar cloth, but I think that does lightning a disservice. Because she actually earned her status as Sargent. Cloud gained his abilities and training through a super soldier program. Lighting did ascend to become a godslayer, but god slaying is pretty standard for for a JRPG.
To quote Yahtzee, "A JRPG isn't a JRPG, without a group of teenagers, using the power of friendship, to kill god."
But she did that more or less on her own in Lightning returns. So I guess it evens out. I'm not familiar with Noctis so I can't say anything against him. All I know is he's a Prince traveling with his friends to get married. But there are many parallels between Cloud and Lightning and yeah. If they had made lighting a Man, the backlash would have probably been less severe.
