It's just very common. People side with their friends because they feel close to them, want to help them, and don't want to lose them.
They don't want to hurt those they feel close to by pointing out their mistakes.
Not keeping the fact in mind that someone who actually IS close to you will understand your reasoning for not siding with them in a case sooner or later, or the reasoning for calling them out on a something they did wrong.
Friends are there to help you amongst other things, yes.
But helping also means that you tell your friends when they did wrong, and try to help them with that and with possible ways to right the wrongs.
Learning from mistakes is a vital thing.
Not everyone can easily see that they did something wrong, and someone has to point it out for them to notice it was wrong.
It can be hard and take time sometimes, but that's just how things are.
