Hi there! I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about your experience at Max the Mutt? I will be attending the animation class there next september and am curious to know if the school is really as good as it looks.

hey i saw ur posts on my friend Jinny's DA about max the mutt. u guys are lucky to get such great teachers, it seems so hard for sheridan to get decent teachers these days bc they all need to have a degree which is totally lame. Is scott caple one of your teachers? he came by to our school a couple of times for guest lectures. He's also friends with some of my teachers.
I'd wanna visit max the mutt sometime and check the campus out and stuff, that and seneca. i have some friends in seneca that i'd want to visit.

Hi Dan, I love your website, very impressive... this is your cousin Tim, by the way. Not sure how I ended up as a deviant artist though...haha... maybe I've discovered a new talent.

I was looking at your website to get some ideas for my friends website (ex-girlfriend). She specializes in water colors. Her website is susandemchak.com. Take a look and tell me what you think. Hope all is well!

Tim

Your brother Jack told me about your site, so here I am. I work with him at the Sedalia newspaper. If he's ever mentioned a crazy French guy, that'd be me.

Anyway, we're online neighbors, so I figured I'd say "hi." You've got some nice artwork. I enjoyed your scenaries (Le village fantastique and Tavern), in particular because buildings have always been my weakness, but your achitecture comes out quite nicely.

Feel free to drop by my neck of the woods. You can write in French or English.

Hi,

I remember my bro mentioning you when I told him about my Deviantart site. Nice character work there. Did you ever go to art school?? What do you do at the Sedalia? ANd how did a french guy end up in Missouri of all places? Are you Canadian or from France??

Au prochaine,
Daniel

demonqueller In reply to DanielTynan [2005-05-12 05:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words. No, I didn't go to art school, but I read a lot. I taught myself by observing the works of other artists, and after a period of unashamed plagiarism I developed my own style (I hope). Today, I wish I could afford to go to a real arts school and learn a trick or two in the digital medium, with an eye toward animation. Oh well. ...

At The Sedalia Democrat, I'm the copy-desk chief, a fancy title that means low pay and bad hours and the privilege to design the newspaper, edit copy, etc. ... It's weird that a French guy gets to correct English copy, but somehow it works out. I hope Jack doesn't cringe too much when I get my hands on his stories. ... Actually, his articles are usually quite good. He's got a knack for bringing out the human side.

I came here in 1990 right out of high school. Missouri seemed like a good idea at the time, because the cost of living and education was manageable. But mostly, it was a way to get away, be on my own and grow up. It's been a good ride.

Well, Daniel, sorry to write so much all at once, but you asked for it! Feel free to take your revenge and tell me your story.

DanielTynan In reply to demonqueller [2005-05-13 00:38:28 +0000 UTC]

well we all learn by copying. I can see you've probably read lots of comics and copied that style. Unfortuntaly I never read too many comics and so my character design has never been that great. Most my classmates have beena nd still are huge comic book fans and as a result can do great characters. I'm better at drafting, painting and animation. But I'll post some characters I designed for my animations soon. If I where you I'd not worry about the digital medium. Just keep practicing pencil drawings, possibly coloring them digitally, but at my school we spent 3 years studying traditional pencil and paper animation and drawing skills. Only at the very end do we get into digital.

As for my story . . well best ask Jack because it could be kind of long. But I've travelled the US a bit, done school here and there and done animation school the past 3 years. Next September I'm going back for a post-graduate course in 3D animation (we have not touched 3D yet). We will be working on a short film. And yes it is expensive. I'm going to finish with a huge debt. One of our best, if not the best artist in our school is a guy from France by the way. Those frenchmen can draw!

The reason that French guy is so good is that he more than likely learned arts the traditional way. France's education system is rigid and frustrating, but by god it teaches you the basics. It's a long process, but in the end you do have a strong foundation to experiment and do your own stuff.

I regret not having gone the arts route. When I was in high school, the buzz was that you had to get a science degree or you'd never amount to anything, so like a dumb ass I followed the flock instead of my instincts. A whole lot of good that did me. The first chance I got to leave the country, I did, and today that degree is completely useless to me.

Your point about drawing is well taken. The whole digital coloring bit is relatively new to me -- something I've dabbled with off and on for the past four years or so. Pencil drawing, on the other hand, is something I've done all my life (I'm 32). It still is more comfortable for me to draw on a piece of paper. I've tried to draw digitally from start to finish, but even on my Intuos 2 tablet it just doesn't feel right.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Your scenes are beautifully done. Take care.
