Hello DarrynGrymm, I have a request. Could you please draw some gestures of people doing martial arts? Thankyou, seeing your work, I think/know you can do it (: x C:

rkuk [2013-05-11 08:27:41 +0000 UTC]

I must ask! where do you get the reference material for so many gesture? Is it all imagination? or sites like posemaniacs? or real world models?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarinHuddy In reply to rkuk [2013-05-11 12:42:50 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks for your question and interest in my process. Yeah, all the gestures are purely from imagination, unless specifically stated otherwise. I'm a huge fan of Vilppu and recommend studying him strongly. He has a strong online presence so I'm sure you'll find something of his easily.
I SHOULD use reference a lot more than I do and I am working on this, I just have an innate desire to draw like this to express myself. Using reference like Pose Maniacs is a great suggestion, I have tended to draw without reference purely to challenge how deep my well of imagination for poses goes, without using reference. Thanks again for your interest, and all the best with YOUR OWN daily practice.

To be more specific, gestures where I have referred to reference have links to their respective websites in the description of each deviation. Cheers!

rkuk In reply to DarinHuddy [2013-05-11 13:56:44 +0000 UTC]

ah gotcha! I'll pay more attention to the descriptions from now on.

As a beginner i find it easier with references and I've been told to *avoid* pictures and try and draw family/go outside and draw people. I've been checking out bridgman's books now too

DarinHuddy In reply to rkuk [2013-05-11 14:55:54 +0000 UTC]

That's great! Bridgman is excellent! Other master teachers I recommend are, in no particular order, Andrew loomis, Glenn vilppu, Michael Hampton, Mike matessi and Rembrandt.

rkuk In reply to DarinHuddy [2013-05-11 20:19:48 +0000 UTC]

already have a book by andrew loomis, i found his approach to drawing heads EXTREMELY useful, working through bridgman now, hope to upload some work soon , I like how he talks about rhythm in his books and also especially how he breaks down the body!

Yeah i guess you just have to pick and mix and match stuff from different masters and make your own unique approach isnt it? I'll have a look at some of the other names you mentioned as well! Thanks for the guidance

Great! Bridgman is excellent! My own preferred master teachers are, in no particular order, Glenn vilppu, Mike matessi, Michael Hampton, Andrew loomis, George Bridgman, and Rembrandt. Each have their own unique perspectives on figure drawing I find useful.
