Oh, MAN, that would be great. That sounds like so much fun. He's got all this charisma oozing off of in in waves. Ohhhhhhhh. The initial thought is awesome, but let's see how easily I can think up a plot? (aka probably not very easily at all, since my heart currently won't stop obessing over a teenage moisture farmer.) Lando. Lando.

I'm honestly just startled you think it's a reasonable idea, but also keen because Lando has basically ascended to the role of Space Husband. Also you don't actually have to do it if you don't want to, I mainly just wanted to see your reaction! I won't turn you down if you do, though.

1. I would love to, 2. I will try to think of a plot, and 3. I am a scumbag, so I probably won't do it in the end... BUT I AM GOING TO MAKE A VALIANT ATTEMPT.

Space Husband Lando? Space Husband Luke for me, then. I've even made up a slightly pathetic, Mary Sueish, self-insert OC that is eerily similar to Mara Jade. //shot.

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR MY FAILURE AS AN AUTHOR.

First of all, I like Mary Sue Self-Inserts. Not as actual art, of course, but I think they're perfectly fine if you make one up for yourself and you're aware of the fact that it's a Mary Sue. You shouldn't expect for other people to enjoy the character, though; Mary Sues are made for the enjoyment of the creator. I think they're important (and I take pity on the thirteen-year-old girls who post theirs works with them), because when society tells you that you're worthless, you can suddenly put yourself in a world where you are the best at everything. It makes you feel incredible after everyone tells you that you can't. People drag on thirteen-year-old girls all the time, so when they create a version of themselves that's wonderful, it really helps them pull through. And they'll eventually learn that it's bad writing, so I don't see the harm.

Now! In my pipedreams (re: those stories you make up in your head to fall asleep or daydreams during class or whatever), I go through a variety of situations, usually with a romanticised version of myself that, if it were in writing, would typically be classified as a Mary Sue Self-Insert with Kirk Syndrome. It's gotten better as I get older, because I am thoroughly able to assess how each fictional universe would alter my personality, but they're still undeniably Mary Sues, because SOMEHOW x happens (like she manages to impress Sherlock, be a member of Team Starkid, have Draco be fond of her). All of these things usually never happen for the universe itself but because of some character that I really like (like Zuko from A:tLA).

So, my latest and okayest one is for Star Wars. I say it's the okayest (lol) because of my approach to the character's relationships with the canonical ones. With Star Wars, you can't really bust into that main trio. Lando can kind of do it, but even then, most people do not associate him with the Luke/Leia/Han deal. Thus, with my Star Wars self-insert, she has a life beyond the trio--even though the purpose of creating this persona was to romance Luke Skywalker oh wow am I trash. She's even got the typical backstory, and it's reminiscent of Mara Jade's. It's not hers exactly, but you get this taste in your mouth. The backstory hits all the trope stops: my character's parents are dead; she makes a brush with the Empire at a young age; she works as a bounty hunter from a stupidly young age, training under Boba Fett; as a twentysomething she makes a moral turnaround and works for the rebellion but still poses as a bounty hunter so that she can receive intelligence from otherwise less-than-trustworthy agents. And, of course, she falls in love with Luke Skywalker. She (okay, okay, I named her Rosyl) does not spend a lot of time with the trio during the story that we see onscreen. Because of the deliberate course of action that unravels within the onscreen story, Rosyl cannot participate because of the set dynamic of the trio. Her own plot involves initially being a bounty hunter double agent for the rebellion (answering to the bounty hunter summons in ESB and all) and tracking down her demons to resolve her inner conflict (those demons being Boba Fett once the action moves to RoTJ). Most of her interaction with the trio occurs between films, and she and the trio become close-ish. Han and Leia don't really know her, but she's at least friends with Luke. And since they need a ship at the end of ESB to get to Tatooine, Rosyl takes them in hers, and OF COURSE she spends the majority of that year that Leia and Luke spend in Obi-Wan's igloo, where Luke builds his lightsabre and Rosyl teaches Leia to convincingly act like a bounty hunter when they go to Jabba's palace to retrieve Han. AND OF COURSE, Rosyl accidentally finds out that she is Force-sensitive (wow) and keeps it a secret from the others, because she knows that everyone has too much on his mind right now. The thing that makes Rosyl different from most of my self-inserts is that she recognises that not everyone should drop everything if she's hurt or having romantic feelings for Luke. She doesn't want to burden anyone and bottles everything up so that the main characters can get their stuff done (this is probably what I would do, anyway. You see that in the x reader that I posted. "Oh, it's in the middle of a war. No time for romance. Mustn't burden the main character of the series."). So, she goes a couple of months before everyone else to Jabba's palace in order to integrate herself unsuspiciously into the palace life--wow, this must be really boring. This is so boring. I mean, it's not to me, but it's a romanticised version of myself. Oops.

Anyway, Rosyl is just considerate of the things that people have to do? In my head, I'm almost done with the events of RoTJ. She realises that Luke is too busy doing his stuff, and the entire rebellion has got a war to win. It's probably my most realistic Mary Sue, but still, how convenient that a bounty hunter turns good and is Force-sensitive and is in love with the main character of the franchise? I make myself laugh sometimes, but then I just think about Luke in that black outfit kicking major arse. And then I'm fine with the stereotypical web I've woven. I would never make a character like Rosyl in a serious work, but since it's just in my head, I feel like it's okay. Especially since Luke Skywalker himself is a Mary Sue.

//And there you go. I am a trash can with a Luke Skywalker complex. That's probably way more than what you expected, and I skipped a lot. Have you created a self-insert--or something along those lines--for hanging out with Lando?

please have mercy I am but a humble trash can

Good grief, when I said 'detailed' I really got my money's worth. Here I go at attempting a reply equal to this calibre.

I agree on the point about Mary Sue inserts, come to think of it - I guess I'd never thought of it that way, but now that I have I feel much more sympathetic. Plus I'm super guilty, I had a self-insert Sonic OC back in Year 7-8 so yeah *shudders* also whispers I love zuko so much

See I don't see anything wrong with this OC? She's no more 'extreme' than any other OC I've ever seen put into a fanfiction, and your consideration for the canon trios and such makes it all the more respectable. Luke's so adorable, who wouldn't want to get together with him? It's not boring either, like she sounds really decently complex all around, or at least pleasantly so. Leave it to you to somehow create a 'Mary Sue' who's actually extremely inoffensive and I would genuinely enjoy reading about. Bounty hunter stories are like drugs.

She's convenient, true, but not at all badly. Or not majorly so - I really do like the idea of her. Also with Luke I would usually hold off from calling him a Mary Sue because of how irritating he was in A New Hope, but then I remember how everybody was tripping over themselves to help him after Obi Wan died and I begin to properly understand. Heck, Leia's probably more flawed tbh. But the appeal remains.

Nah not for Lando, I just like him half seriously and half jokingly bc he's certified 'space scoundrel'. My only true Mary Sues were those I concocted to have pipe dreams about in Year 6, 7 and 8 during a particularly rocky period. But damn I loved them. I'm so much worse than you pls do not apologise

NOW YOU HAVE TO TELL ME ABOUT THIS SONIC OC. I BET YOU LIKED SHADOW. YOU LIKED SHADOW, DIDN'T YOU? yes zuko is beautiful and such character development ohhhhh

gee thank you for saying that my self-insert is okay. that actually makes me feel better. I am never going to actually write anything about Rosyl, though; she is strictly a pipedream. Bounty hunter stories are so cool; did you hear they're making a spin-off series about Boba Fett?! At last! We'll get to see him hang out with all his bounty hunter acquaintances and maybe see him grow up after the clone wars!

Okay, yeah, I agree. Luke isn't quite a Mary Sue, because he has incredible character development. It's just that he's convenient, like we said earlier about Rosyl. Mark Hamill has talked about how he knew Luke was going to have a lot of character development, so he had to be consciously whiny during ANH. Mark says he cringes now whenever he hears the Certified Best Line of ANH: "But I was going to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!" Man. I love that even though that is super whiny, it still doesn't beat anything that Anakin said in the prequels. Shhhhhhh Leia is perfect.

Not for Lando?! Not for Lando?! Okay. Yeah, Mary Sues are usually made to project strong emotions upon, at least in my personal observations. When people are vehemently burdened with a strong feeling, they usually turn to fiction. It's kind of nice. but didn't we all have Mary Sue OCs in middle school? we're all on the shame train. i mean, c'mon, i had one for death note, of all things. i'm glad you got through your rough period with them, though.

Oh no, I've been sprung. D: Well yeah, you're right - it was Shadow. It was this totally typical thing where she 'wasn't like the others' and she like, transformed into a hedgehog, and they fell in love and lived in this castle made of ice in like an enchanted forest? And there were Pokémon, I think, and they went on adventures a lot. And also, I apparently had no imagination because her design was like identical to Shadow's, except she was magenta. Also that was her name. I'm gonna hide now.

ZUKO'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS BETTER THAN MINE.

Haha, it's a pleasure if it makes you feel better. Honestly, though, it takes a good deal of creativity when you're older to make a Mary Sue because you're conscious of what you're creating, but you're still getting kicks out of it at the same time. Does that make sense? Even if you don't write anything about her, the fact she's got more complexity than the average Mary Sue would make pipedreams a lot of fun. And no, I didn't know that about the bounty hunter thing! Is it going to be animated, or something? I'd love to see anything about him growing up. He was such a cute child even for Attack of the Clones.

I just like Luke way too much tbh. But yeah he is convenient; the only thing that saves it is the fact he's not the Chosen One (it took me a surprising amount of time when I was younger to figure out that Anakin was still the Chosen One, not Luke?). I'm glad to hear Mark Hamill was aware of it, too. Come on, though, that line is legend. :'D (And may we never forget the line about the sand.)

Yeah I know, it's surprising. You're right, the appeal of Mary Sues is certainly a very tangible thing. Thank you; I hope yours were helpful, too! And still are.

"I'm not like other hedgehogs. I run so much more quickly than all the others. I am special." My favourite thing about that may just be that they lived in an ice castle in a presumably temperate forest. I can see how the Pokemon blend in with the Sega stuff, even though I have a very shallow understanding of Sonic the Hedgehog. And the design thing is perfectly fine; I tended to make my OC's clothes the same colour scheme as her love interest's. It's probably because of the subliminal desire to make another character as great as the one you initially admired. Magenta--it could be worse. I think that's been used as a real name. No need to hide.

Argh, wasn't Zuko's redemption arc incredible?! You can really see all of the conflict in his emotional choices, and his actions to become part of the Gaang seem perfectly logical and even more, the audience wants it. It was just a perfect combination of realistic decisions, teenage awkwardness, changes of heart, and good hair choices.

Not much about the series has been released yet; I just saw the news in a passing article, but I believe it is going to be live-action and occur in the span between Revenge of the Sith and Empire Strikes Back. I could be wrong, though. I would love to see further development on his relationship with Jango--even though Jango is very dead--and the rest of the clones, and if possible, I would want to see his getting spit out of the Sarlacc pit in RoTJ just because I'm silly.

I hate sand. It's rough. And coarse. And irritating. And it gets everywhere. he said those lines to her and married her the next day what the heck

Oh my gosh, stop it, you're terrible. Yes, I obviously wasn't taking Geography then, rip. I basically just threw in everything I liked and hoped for the best! Thanks for liberating me on the design point, and yeah, the name shall stay with me for a very long time lol

I admit I haven't seen the entirety of A:TLA yet so I can't have as deep as discussion about it as I would like, but I know at least his hair changes and he becomes like, an awkward friend? It makes me so happy to see him redeem himself, though, as he's such a good character, and those side-switches are one of my favourite tropes.

Oh, cool! Wow. I'm so into that idea, it's not even funny. I can't wait to see what comes of it, plus the possibility of Sarlacc rejection.

A:tLA is honestly one of the best television shows I have ever seen, animation or otherwise. Its character arcs and constantly moving plot (save for that beach episode) draw me in like almost no other story. It is concise and clearly knows how to effectively tell a emotionally evocative story. You finish it feeling sad to see it go, yet the conclusion is ultimately satisfying. 10/10 do recommend.

ugh padme deserved SO much better. i forced myself to watch the prequels again recently, and i am so amazed at what the writers did. everything is so bad. everything. the best part, and i mean something that was actually good, is that when padme goes to see anakin on mustafar when he's all hotpants corrupt. they play leia's theme there. padme is supposed to stir feelings of leia there due to her caring competence, and it is totally awesome. it's the one thing i find clever about the prequels. midi-chlorian count, bah! i actually... anakin is a totally awful person and dense as a brick, but he is super-de-duper hot. literally.

I'm now far enough through it to have a decent discussion, I guess? I'm like... Halfway through Book 2. Zuko's only just left to travel alone away from his uncle. Damn I'm addicted to this show man. The character arcs are absolutely awesome, although I think I'm yet to encounter the beach episode (I thought the canyon one was generally considered the worst?). I'll keep watching and I promise to return soon for deeper conversation (JUST LET ME SAY THAT IROH KEEPS MAKING ME CRY I HATE IT).

Haha modern torture. I kid, I actually enjoy them a lot (I'll do anything for Ewan McGregor). Oh my goodness, I love the bit where she goes to Anakin - of course it gets ruined pretty fast by the fact he knocks her out, but hey. Leia's theme is beautiful. I gotta say right now it's of constant pain to me imagining what the prequels could have been - considering character depth, action, dialogue memorable for the right reasons... What if they had a good director? The possibilities! Anakin is indeed still very attractive.

I was thinking about law for a bit, but I realised that usually you go to law school when other people go to grad school. I'd rather get a doctorate in history than be a lawyer, so that option is gone. I don't want to be in school for the next fifteen years. I'm trying to keep it to ten. I have no idea what I'm going to do with degrees in History and Theatre, but I'll be prepared for it. I've honestly never heard of a lawyer focusing on geography; how will that work?

You'd do very well at it, I think, judging by your sort of logical thought patterns (more logical than mine, at any rate). That's odd, here you just apply for a law degree at the university of your choice and hope for the best. I suppose your theatre will work out if indeed you do publish your play, and history you can take further if you want to study anthropology or archaeology or something. As for the Geography aspect, I imagine it might tie into some sort of environmental consultation thing, or otherwise will work to my advantage if I study human geography or demographics, since law ties into those. Idk man don't ask me lmao.

Obviously!

Dead people are the easiest to are about, but humans haven't changed a whole lot. Look up the graffiti in Pompeii if you haven't read it. Whilst I do genuinely adore a lot of historical figures, I think the world's general attraction with the past has to do with the archaic aesthetic. For examples, see the Hetalia fandom. OH, WAIT.

Really? That's very interesting - I would've thought you guys would be taught a lot of this stuff in school. What does high school history in American schools usually cover?

Ah yes, the graffiti in Pompeii - incredible. :'D There is certainly a lot to be admired about the past, especially in the wealthy aesthetic of clothing, warfare, houses, etc. But in doing so we can ignore the very simple humanity of most of those people, which isn't altogether much different.

The Hetalia fandom is... majestic. In its own twisted way.

Okay, so we take one year of U.S. History. One year. They expect us to know everything about it in one year. I could take a class on one document and still not know everything about it in one year. They usually shove coaches into the history teaching spots, so the coaches aren't really passionate about history. My class hasn't touched our textbooks all year; we just listen to the teacher go on about his stupid PowerPoint presentations. I have never had a good history teacher, so I really don't know why I like it so much. Everyone puts history on the backburner here. We spend so little time on things that are so important. Not to mention my teacher gives out false information. I know more about history than my teacher, and I'm just a kid.

Victorian humour is legitimately the best—not for the actual jokes, which are basically all about drunkenness and sexual exploits, but because its crude content is such a great foil to the overall appearance of the time period. They're just people, and it's great. I can't wait to see the 2000s romanticised.

A year? What do you learn the rest of the time? It's hard for me to imagine doing one topic for an entire year, since in my school we cover different topics for ten weeks, but I suppose that in the US that's not very much in the overall scope of things. But that's really sad that they don't even bother giving you teachers who care, particularly as history is so important and people brush it off enough as it is. I'm sorry you've got to deal with all that crap with your teachers. Is this in college?

I find the Victorian era particularly engaging just because of that point - that so much emphasis is placed now, and perhaps even then, on the outside, upon chastity and decorum. People drank endlessly because the water was tainted. Had affairs with everything that moved and covered it up with wealth/reputation, sending each other letters that had some bizarre combination of romantic gestures and complete bawdiness.

I wonder how they'll manage that - say we were a meme-loving culture of thoughtful individuals? Or maybe that's too contradictory.

I'm in secondary school. We have different topics for each year for courses, like one year is World History, and one is American Government. A year seems like a long time to spend on a topic, but I feel like we hardly cover anything. We barely scratch the surface, and it just kills me. There's so much I don't know, but it's not being taught. Honestly, I could get a better education reading Wikipedia than my current history class. I know the material is enough for most people to have a polite conversation about it, but for people like me (all one of us), it is kind of irksome to have so little subject matter presented to us—some of it incorrect, at that. How's your history department? Is it at least full of enthusiastic people?

Ah, those highfalutin nerds. I also really love their horribly wrong concepts of medicine. Oh, wow, laudanum as the cure-all! It's really fabulous how wrong it is. I kind of want to write a fic like that, but it'd just end up being a Victorian drunk!country x reader. Lame. Plus, I'm too busy working on that Industrial Rev fic.

Bro, memes are important. Not like Anna Karenina important, but important in the way that they connect people all over the world. They affect mindsets and cultures. They sometimes change the way we speak. I don't think people will romanticise the memes; I think they'll romanticise music and vocabulary—which, I guess, circles back to memes. Eh. I just want badly made period pieces of the early 2000s.

Oh noooo. Really? I legit thought you were in your latter college years or something, like damn. I'm in Year 12 and I felt like your padawan or something.

Dude, American government? That sounds boring as all hell. I guess you're hardly likely to learn/retain much when your teachers are awful at their jobs. I sympathise with you and share your pain. When teachers have the opportunity to teach you so much and they give so little, it's like death by a thousand cuts. Personally my history department's alright, but it's not so much a department as a standard curriculum. I take Modern and Ancient History, both of which I got taught last year by an absolute drop kick of a man who would legit just give us worksheets and nothing else. I swear I knew far more than he ever did. It's much better this year, but the topics can be boring (most interesting things I ever got taught were in Year 8 and 6, when we did the Middle Ages and convicts, respectively). So my teacher's passionate, but with only ten weeks a topic things get skimmed a hell of a lot.

HAHA YES. Just hit me up with some leeches, man. Knock out kids with a bit of laudanum and you're good. Oh please, just write about any of these topics and I'll cry because your writing makes me so happy. Personally I'd love to write a drunk!England who's only drunk because there's a cholera epidemic. And that Industrial Rev fic is going to make me faint with happiness.

Memes are the universal language, brah. I can't wait to see what people think of the 2000s. Also sorry for the hella long reply lol.

Oh, really? I am far too immature to be in college yet (I had to look up the Australian school system, because I've heard that some countries call the last two years of secondary school college. Why are most things inconsistent?), but we should be roughly the same age. Let's just pretend we're both Jedis already.

The class about government isn't that bad, but there are a couple of big projects that take forever to do, such as this "Game of Life" thing, where you basically fast-forward to where you have a job and have to pay bills, and stuff. Chunks of it are due at the end of each month (because, you know, rent). It's not hard; it's just annoying to do all of it. My condolences for your having that Nothing-But-Worksheets Teacher. Did he ever even try to do something else?

And now I want a leeches fic, but I have no idea how I could make that deep. It would have to be a face-value sort of fic. But now I've written all of those on my prompt list, so maybesomedayeventually? This Industrial Rev fic is giving me some trouble, because I have a physical plot but not an emotional plot. I've already written some of it, and perhaps the emotional plot will just emerge by itself. Until then, here's to reading personal accounts.

Wow. Such long reply. Many sentence. Much okay. My favourite recent meme, I suppose, would be the inappropriate audition song one. I've seen it done well with a bunch of Shakespearean characters (I tend to follow Shakespearean and Founding Fathers blogs). But imagine a period drama set in 2004. Who wants to bet everyone'd be dressed like Lizzie McGuire?

Oh yeah, totally. I'm honestly not being sarcastic when I say you exude maturity, particularly with your vocabulary. If anyone's immature here it's me, lol. The Australian school system is thankfully very simple, and we don't even use the word 'college' for anything. You are my kindred spirit.

A year on it, though? I think I'd die. At least they're obviously trying to teach you some real life skills, which is something sorely lacking in my curriculum. The worksheets guy did have PowerPoints now and then, both they weren't exactly useful, and I have a certain memory of this one time he gave us these paper Aztec dress up doll/cut out things to keep us occupied in Year 10. It's hilarious now.

You know what, I'm going to write that leech fic, just you watch. :'D But maybe we should both do it, just for fun. And thanks so much for putting up with that Industrial Revolution fic, because as pumped as I am to read it, you didn't have to write it and I'm touched. I'm sure it'll be incredible whatever happens.

Very relief. So repetition. Wow. Haha, I'm not surprised you liked that one, with your theatre passion! You literally have like, the most intelligent blog. I deleted my tumblr a while back (about three times, actually) but when I use one again it'll honestly just be memes. Maybe people will just use Mean Girls for the period drama.

lol I honestly thought you were about 24ish when I first read your stuff. A 24ish English major with a blessed overabundance of writing classes and a wonderful amount of time for research and writing. But whatevs.

The year thing doesn't really bother me that much. I mean, I'm used to it. I see how some other systems are way, way better, but it's not like America's going to listen to its children begging for reform. Aztec dress up dolls?! That's fabulous. I think I'd make a Cortez doll to make my own adventures.

I'll hold you to that leech fic, but be careful with it. If you don't research it correctly, it might puts on sunglasses ...suck. Okay, you can shoot me now. And yeah, the Industrial Rev thing is coming--slowly but surely.

Wait, you got on my blog? Sometimes I forget that I have a link to it on here. Thanks for saying it's intelligent, but I serve a very limited audience. It's kind of hard to find people who like 1) Alexander Hamilton, 2) Broadway, and 3) anime. Surprisingly, though, most of my followers are people I don't know. What was your blog like ante-deletion? And I suddenly want Mean Girls to be the only record historians can find of the early 2000s. Think of the history books.

lol that's actually so flattering. tbh I can't even drink and I've never taken a writing class and I suck. but I thought exactly the same, that you were eons older.

I suppose that makes good sense. If we did it here I'd more than likely feel the same way. I wish you could have a system more appropriate to what you want to learn, though - you deserve that much.

I've been reading documents on bloodletting techniques during Maths and English, if that gives you any more faith. What should I strictly be avoiding, do you think (so that my fic doesn't... suck)?

Lol, yep (confession time, there was some minor creeping involved because I was curious). There's no harm in having a small audience, and your interests are pretty diverse! My blog used to have a fair bit of stuff that I'm no longer into, and I can't even recall what it was called.
Well, it's better than them having the Notebook, I'll say that much.

Not even one class? I thought surely you had taken something. You don't suck; you suck about as much as the Beatles.

Oh, that entire warning was just a setup for the lame joke. My apologies.

Would you believe I've never even touched a Nicolas Sparks book/film? I can't say that I have an opinion on them--but I take it you have?

Nah bro, the vast majority of my improvement came from a desire to be better than everyone else (kind of. Actually not really. I read a lot of fanfiction, did a lot of general reading and tried to avoid what I thought were cliches). And thank you, you're good for the soul.

Ah, gosh, I thought you were serious! Well I'm doing my research anyway. My friend says I'm dedicated.

I haven't, either, mainly because the sheer amount of white, corny heterosexuality is close to unbearable. Another of my friends got me to watch the Notebook and I now regret it a lot. Consider yourself fortunate.
