If Haley Was in Wonderland (Part Two)

"Dribble," the hare tutted, "Absolute dribble."

"But see! No party dress!" the lunatic, the Mad Hatter, exclaimed. "Therefore it IS her unbirthday! Welcome! Welcome!"

Haley began to protest, but as the foul smelling lunatic ushered her to a seat, she realized that lying might be her only chance at getting that tea for, perhaps by cooincidence, that very day happened to be her birthday. Oops.

"How much tea would you like?" the hare warbled.

"A cup, a suppose..." Haley murmmured.

"Not enough!" the Hatter cried. "Not enough! Are you trying to deprive us of the most basic necessities."

"Maybe you really are British," Haley muttered under her breath, then a little louder she said, "Alright, alright. I'm sorry. Is half a cup managable?"

"I half a cup-" the Hatter stopped as if swallowing a frog, "Is half a cup-" the insult welled in his beady eyes. "Is half a cup MANAGABLE? My little Unbirthday girl, you insult us so! To think that we are so poor as to not be able to offer our guest HALF a cup of tea!"

"Well, I only thought-" Haley began.

"Thinking..." the hare whispered. "Thinking! Do you like riddles?" he asked as he slammed a tea cup on the brim of the table. The glass shattered and only on side of the cup remained.

"What are you doing?!" Haley protested.

"Getting your 'half a cup' of tea," the hare bobbled, tipping the tea pot over so that the tea glided over the ceramic and onto the table cloth. "Here you are." He flung the broken cup at her. no tea fell on Haley's grey dress since it had all made friends with the lace trim by the hare.

"Change places!" the lunatic shouted.

The March Hare bounded to the other side of the table, but both the lunatic and Haley stayed put. Haley crossed her arms sourly. This was turning out to be a very foul birthday indeed.

"Now, as to riddles," the Mad Hatter began.

"Yes," Haley spoke, rising, flinging the chair behind her, "Answer me this. Have you been treating me so poorly because it IS my birthday? Because honestly, this is quite rude."

The March Hare and Mad Hatter stared, agape, at Haley. The frail doormouse lifted its drunken head and released a gasp of surprise before falling back into a stupor.

"OUT!" the Hatter shrieked as the Hare tucked his ears inside themselves. "OUT! OUT!"

Haley felt a cane crack quite near her back. She rushed as far away from the comotion as possible as the Hare began to wail and the Hatter started throwing rocks.

Then, silence crept. Haley turned and saw that the table was no longer in sight.

"Stupid cat, giving me bad directions. This is the worst birthday ever," Haley scowled. Then, she added as she sauntered away, "Lipton must have changed their recipe."

If Haley Was in Wonderland (Part One)

A slight figure meandered down a well-trodden path, her dark curls wrapping around her bare arms like woolen sleeves. Her British Fan-girl mind began craving a piece of home after a long trek through a strange, darkly whimsical land. As if by chance, a narrow table stretched before her, precariously stacked with plates and cups and those little saucers of milk and sugar.

It was a Tea Party.

Little did Haley know that she was not invited.

Although, neither did her host, however, and, for the time being, it seemed convenient.

"Change places!" a flamboyant lunatic cackled.

A tousled hare flopped three chairs down where cold tea awaited him. Haley stood there, stomach rumbling, and remembered how much she loved watching Mrs. Hudson serve John tea. Haley would look on, clutching a hand-sown Sherlock doll, sipping bottled Lipton tea, which wasn't the same. But THIS, oh this was just so close to perfect. It was chaotic and utterly British. She HAD to have her part.

"Might I join you?" she asked timidly, as they were complete strangers, and she had been well warned of Stranger Danger.

"NO ROOM!" trilled the hare, gargling the brown liquid. "I say no room!"

"Posh, there is plenty of room. Look, at least three seats are empty," Haley pointed. Perhaps the strangers should instead have been wary of her.

"They're for us!" the lunatic announced, yellow teeth protruding from chapped lips. "Us, I say! Us!"

"Just room for ONE more?" Haley pleaded, thinking *Tea. Oh, just give me some ****ing tea*.

"Hold on," the lunatic, bedecked in a fully adorned hat, rose a finger to his lips. "You don't realize that this is a special occasion you are triapsing in on, little lady."

"Oh," Haley blushed, embarrased. "Sorry." Then, out of curiosity, she queried, "What occasion might that be?"

"Well, it's our UnBirthday!" the lunatic declared. "You only dont have a birthday three-hundred and sixty-four days a year!"

*What did the cat say his name was? Sad Batter? No, Sad Hatter. No, MAD HATTER. I think. Oh, close enough.* Haley thought.

"Maybe it's her UnBirthday, too," a miniscule doormouse muttered incoherently from a sugar bowl.
