First off: People root for the heros regardless of what they do, and doing things that are out of character tremendously pisses people off a lot. Especially with the beloved Judy Hopps. Judy Hopps cannot be the antagonist of the fiction or people will hate it on principle.
Second: There's nothing for Nick to overcome, add some psychological trauma in there! People love it when you twist and corrupt a character to loose that innocent charm, so have Nick be violently tormented and tested on. Have him suffer something like dementia or something that'll attract some CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
Also, the world is gritty and shitty already. People will complain if they can't get that escape from reality, so if you want a angst story you have to be sneaky as fuck with it.
Disguise it as something like a comedic tongue in cheek story that's all funny and light hearted until they realize that BAM! You got some intense shit happening that slowly crecendos back into tongue in cheek humor.
If you make an all work and no play story, I promise you that you will hate the story more than Reddit will.
But if you sneak the fucked up shit behind a curtain of things that's fun to read and write, you start to create an eerie suspension that gives off the impression that this story is hiding Dr. Frankenstein's Monster and that Monster can suddenly attack at anytime.
