Doug, I've followed your work in Star Wars: The Dark Times for a long time. It's beautifully rendered and breath taking. I absolutely love what you've done; your comics are true artwork. I've heard there were some difficulties a while ago with the time it took you to produce your artwork, but your quality is well worth waiting for. Thanks for giving artists like me inspiration. Merry Christmas and have a great New Year, Doug!

Hey Doug,
I just heard that the new "Essential Guide to Star Wars Characters" will feature your artwork! Congrats.
I'd love to collaborate with you if you ever want to work alongside a lightsaber designer. Especially in regard to the EU characters.

Hey Doug, great work! I'll be attending the Star Wars convention and I definitely think I'll be pre-ordering one of your prints to pick up. Some day I hope to become more established in the illustration field and work for Lucasfilm or LucasArts, so I totally envy you! Keep up the great work.

Hi Doug, I met you today at Tate's and I wanted to thank you for taking the time to give me some feedback and being so complimentary toward my work. It was really great meeting you.

I was the girl with the drawing of the flute player and children, just in case. There were so many people there.

Sorry for the late reply. I've just started the new quarter and was really busy preparing for the move back to SCAD. I was curious if you remember what the work looked like from the other artists coming by? Though it's been awhile, so no big.

I really wanted to repeat how freaking nice you are! I'm excited to tell my professors about the positive experience once things settle down. I'd really like to continue talking to you, is this the best place to do that through?

Doug-Wheatley In reply to OrangeCurl [2011-09-21 14:33:06 +0000 UTC]

Alright! Kristal, let me assure you that when it comes to critiques, my rep is far from nice, in fact, there are some at Dark Horse Comics that think I'm down right mean! If I start out by asking, do you want the truth, or a fantasy, choose fantasy. This was not the case with your work, every comment I've made, I humbly think you've earned! Nothing was said out of kindness. Not that I'm mean personally, I've been known to pet a cat from time to time email me at dougwheatley@rocketmail.com, and I'll write you with my 24/7 email. I know, it's like Maxwell Smart doors.

I plan to go to art school sometime in the fall and I wanted to ask you some specific questions about the field that you work, because I'm trying to make a decision about a career as a comic book artist. Thank you for your time.

-Clint Keffer

How would you answer these questions?

What's this job really like?

What can I expect?

What's the best part of this job?

What's the worst part of this job?

How much does it really pay?

How crowded is the field?

Is there stability? (Is this a field that provides stability or do people get "canned" a lot

How much pressure is there?

How many hours per week do you work?

What skills do I need?

What were you surprised by?

Do you recommend a good school? (Is there another school you'd recommend besides the Joe Kubert School?)

Thanks again!

What's this job really like? -You draw and paint and design under pressure of a deadline and get paid poorly or really, really, reallly well for it.

What can I expect?-What you put into it, really.

What's the best part of this job?- You to get to create and paint and draw all day

What's the worst part of this job?-You have to create and paint and draw all day it depends on what your doing it for, if your doing it for fame and fortune, then you may be disappointed when no one give you the attention you think you deserve or the money you think your worth. If your doing it for the art, than this job can be torture when you are not reaching the level or goal of your work. etc.

How much does it really pay? There are all kinds of figures out there, and truth be told most artist work for several clients and depending on the artist and the client there may be no flat rate set. I have heard anywhere from $7,000 and year in comics to $500,000 I think reality rests anywhere between $7,000 and $90,000 a year without royalties.

How crowded is the field? As crowded as any other, competition is a reality in every vocation. How good is my work? is a better question.

Is there stability? (Is this a field that provides stability or do people get "canned" a lot.-I've been working steady for 16 years, I've seen people come and go, shoot to the top and disappear. There are many who I've met coming into the industry who are still here. I have not been fired from a job.

How much pressure is there? that's an individual question that must be answered by the individual, what might be pressure to me could be a happiness for you...I am under severe pressure, but it is self inflicted. I demand the best from myself, usually more than the deadline will allow, and so I am in conflict from the outset. I have found a more peaceful place recently, that allows me to do what I need to in the time I have.

How many hours per week do you work?-Between 50 and 70

What skills do I need?-Business management program, Drafting/drawing, a knowledge of sequencial storytelling. 3d modeling, Photoshop/painter mastery. Time management.

What were you surprised by?-The year I broke in the comic industry collapsed into what it is now. You could say that Marvel comics filing for chapter 11 was a bit of a shocker.

Do you recommend a good school? (Is there another school you'd recommend besides the Joe Kubert School?)-The best and only school in the world for you resides between your ears. Your brain is a classroom and the world outside is the teacher of all subjects. You can feed that brain what ever it needs, and judging by the questions here, you know exactly how to do that. There are so many fantastic resources for art students today. Life drawing is a must regardless of where you choose to go, the skills you learn cannot be taught anywhere else. If I were to recommend a school, it would be one that could teach discipline, maybe martial arts, or yoga, no kidding, focusing your mind on the task at hand is everything, all things, Reality is "now" everything else is inaccurately remembered or invented. Learn to do this and you can accomplish anything.

Sorry it took so long to do this.

Crazy busy.

Best,

Doug
