The icon gave me a LOT of trouble as well. Which is why I've had mine since I first joined. I'm sorry to say that I can't help you out with that, I had to have someone else do it for me. I would suggest going into DA's help system and asking them.

It's called an emoticon. When you post a comment there is a tiny link underneath the list of moods that says "Emoticons". There you will find a very long list to choose from. Just type in the emoticon code thingy on the right side of the list and your emoticon will appear when your comment is sent.

Oh, well in that case you should search the almighty internet. Just google "avatars" and find a site loaded with a variety of different kinds and sizes and pick the one that's right for you. Although, I'm pretty sure there's a size limit. Then, after you've saved it on your computer, you go to the edit profile and browse until you find it. You probably get it by now.
