Well an apprenticeship is my only recommended way to become a tattoo artist. Keep asking the shops around! The more persistent you are the more likely someone is to teach you. It can be tough and a lot of artists don't want an apprentice, or they charge a large fee at the start to teach you. It's definitely a tough industry to get into. If you really want to do it though, don't get too discouraged. Gotta have a thick skin to work as a tattoo artist.

As a tattoo artist what has helped you learn to do color? I have been tattooing for about 8 months now and trying to learn the art of color tattooing... any advice? Your work is sick as fuck btw!

Thanks, I think one of the biggest parts of doing color is using colors that compliment each other. A color wheel is a good thing to have laying around. As far as actually tattooing full color pieces goes, I was taught to lay in all the black and gray shading and put color over that. But I've found that if you use strictly colors to achieve your values everything looks much smoother and more vibrant than putting color over the gray washes. At the very least i use 3 shades of any color to go from dark to light, if not 4 or 5. The more subtle variations on the colors your putting in a tattoo (as far as realistic tattoos go anyway) the better it looks I think. Painting helps a lot too cuz you work dark to light similar to the way you would tattoo and its a good way to become familiar with choosing colors and values that make sense. Hope that was at least somewhat helpful!

Hell Yeah, that was helpful. I did a color piece the other day and kinda did both, putting color over what i shaded and using diff shades of the colors.I think I did alright. I really dont know yet. But thanks a lot for the advice. Its greatly appreciated!

Just keep working on your linework. Linework can make or a break a tattoo. I used to put pencils into my steel grips and put a tattoo machine on top to draw just to get used to the weight and balance and holding the grip comfortably. It really helped, and made it alot easier to translate a drawing into a tattoo since you were already used to how the tattoo machine feels in your hand. Also think about starting and stopping points to help eliminate having to pick up a line where you left off and risking having them not line up perfectly. It's a long process man thats all I gotta say haha
