# About me
Hi everyone. I started uploading my pictures recently and the response has been really good, so I thought I shouldprobably tell you something about myself. I am a self employed artist living in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on the
Eastern coast of England. I sell my paintings in a local art shop (The Painters Palette), and also take commissions
from here. I work mostly in acrylics but also do pencil drawings. (I have tried my hand at oils with varying success.)
I aim for a photo-realistic style which I guess you either love or hate. The pictures I've posted here are all scans
of work that I've done over the last 5 or 6 years. With the economic recession, work has been sparse of late so I am
the typical "starving artist", but I love doing what I do and it's better than getting a real job, lol.
In my spare time I create digital art using Daz Studio and Poser, (I've posted a bunch of these in my gallery as well.)
I'm totally overwhelmed by the comments I've
recieved and am grateful to everyone who has looked at my pictures. Thanks a lot.
Anyway, thanks for visiting (and for bothering to read this!) I'll post more stuff whenever I can.

Fionamca [2011-11-28 16:43:46 +0000 UTC]
Hi my name is Fiona and i'm a student at Glasgow School of Art. I'm struggling for subject matter in my work as I like to paint photo-realistically too but it takes me too long to paint that way. Therefore my uni work is in a different style to the way in which I would prefer to paint. I was wondering how you start off your paintings? Do you grid them from photos or just draw them freehand onto a canvas?

Hi. I usually print out a reference photo and lay this beside the canvas (I work on a flat desk as opposed to an easel). I use a pencil to draw (freehand) the minimum amount of detail I can, just to get an idea of where everything goes. I try to avoid too many pencil lines as I prefer to "draw" with a really watered down colour (usually black or dark brown) and use a very small brush to start painting in details. With a portrait this would be the outlines of the eyes, eyeballs, nostrils, centre line of the mouth, hairline etc. When I'm happy I use a less watered down paint to darken these areas and start adding colour to paint shadows etc. I always start with the darkest areas and work to light. I build the paint up gradually, sometimes painting the same area several times. The beauty of acrylics is that it's easy cover up mistakes or paint over bits you don't like. I'm terrible with watercolour.
I have used the grid method on larger paintings and I find it works really well.
Hope this helps (I'm not great at explaining things, lol). If you need any more help or advice don't be afraid to ask. Good luck with the course, Paul.
