I made the custom meshes for the map, as for terrain maps, they are the worst, XD I'd recommend using gimp.  Then use separate layers to draw the main heights you want to achieve in the map, then on another separate layer on top of the rest draw in the details.  At least that's how I do it.  But don't worry I will finish the map someday hopefully!
