Ah, grinding XP for more skill points. Always murder on pretty much everything else.
But seriously, good luck with getting into college. Don't worry overly much about a "good" college unless you want like fancy names on your resume or w/e. Not that the people giving people jobs even look at what school you went to.

it's a quest board. as in, one person posts a picture and text and asks what the character should do next. everyone else then posts their ideas and the artist then draws it up. how they pick an idea is up to the author in question.
pictures are also technically optional except in the first post of a thread.

varawdn In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-26 15:35:10 +0000 UTC]
I actually enjoy Beta reading. It lets me do what I usually do in my head and give it back to the authors to help them get better. But even besides that fact, I just really like reading. Usually after I finish a book, I'll get on the computer and read something unpublished by someone I like, just for the change of pace. I try not to think of it as just another job. Although, I do look forward to one day being able to charge people for it.
And as to reading your other stuff, I haven't read too much more. But what I've read, I've liked.

Engineseer In reply to varawdn [2011-01-27 04:37:49 +0000 UTC]
The point of the story was to write something ridiculous as seriously as possible. That story was so full of bullshit that even the main character himself calls me out on it.
The scary thing is.....sometimes.....I'm tempted to write more.

Hey
I've been very busy. Lots of work to do at school. I've been trying to move forward with some of my own projects too but there's so little time. Plus my work usually goes through a period of revision after it's finished which means it's even longer before I put it up.
Thanks for saying hi.
How have you been?

Mana4X2 In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-24 11:01:13 +0000 UTC]
Really good lately hun. Sorry I didn't reply straight away, got distracted with replies to my X-Men RPG. Glad you're okay as far as health goes and the like. I know the feeling of having all these things you want to do but not having enough time to get them done.
Best wishes with your endeavors... I'm heading into Chapter 16 of my GoW Fic now. Well, soon, going through edits on each chapter first as I get it put back up at GearsFanon, the original site I started on but got fed up with having so many different places to edit each time I changed something. Lol.
Am happy with the earlier chapters now... btw, that one I mentioned I edited that time, gone through another lot, lol. Therefore, I know that feeling too. That one chapter alone has been through three edits and edits within edits *facepalms*. Needed it though, .

I know what you mean. I hold back from submitting my work till I think it's ready but even then I may decided some parts still need tweaking. I recently got a beta-reader and I'm quite apprehensive about having my stories stand up to some serious scrutiny.
I've also started practicing drawing. On day I hope to get pictures of my characters without having to pay other artists.

Lol, I felt like that when asking you to start reading Deployable Weapon.
Curious, what is your story about hun? I may not be able to read it cos of my personal preferences regarding certain things, but a general gist would still be good .
And kudos to you learning to draw... I can draw basic stuff, but people... oh my goodness, stick figures are the best I can do. LOL. Anyways, I'm off to bed. Night.

Engineseer In reply to Mana4X2 [2011-01-24 15:18:29 +0000 UTC]
Well In a nutshell my current story is a supernatural/action story with a heavy romance sub-plot. It's based off a series by another deviant.
The protagonist is basically this guy who works for a paranormal counter-terrorist organisation. He ends developing a mutual attraction for a monster girl he was supposed to hunt down.
Meanwhile a washed up super-villainess is trying to infiltrate the organisation and all sorts of horrors are coming to down.
In the end sex, violence, salty language and all that other stuff you don't like ensues.
I'm also thinking off starting another story that supposed to be less gritty but still perhaps a bit too much for you. In a nutshell I'd say it's Twilight+Scott Pilgrim with a dash of Harry Potter. (It sounds bad I know but I believe I can make it work!)
This one is still in the works I havn't even ironed out the background yet.

I don't get how you can be a fan of Gears of War and be adverse to graphic violence. While I agree the blood and gore are not integral to the gears experience given the dark nature of the world there is a certain amount of brutality that can't be omitted.
π: 0 β©: 1
Mana4X2 In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-25 05:33:50 +0000 UTC]
Big difference between omitting it and staying away from that side of things in graphic detail when writing about it hun. Don't expect anyone to really understand where I'm coming from although I'm not the only GoW fan like that.
I turn the gore off when playing the game and only allude to it within my fan fic, yet there will be scenes where it's presence is a bit more obvious, as you've probably already seen. I don't have the emotional strength to explore what I already know is a part of such concepts. It's why I can't watch historical war movies... upsets the heck out of me what people are capable of doing to each other during those times.
I give big kudos to those who can, doesn't mean I have to read their stories .
π: 0 β©: 1
Engineseer In reply to Mana4X2 [2011-01-25 07:30:01 +0000 UTC]
I sort of understand where you're coming from. There are certain themes and situations that I'm uncomfortable exploring for whatever reason. Although for me it's harder to define a set of rules about what makes me uncomfortable as most of it depends on context.
π: 0 β©: 1
Mana4X2 In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-25 08:00:03 +0000 UTC]
Exactly.
Fortunately I became a Gears of War fan already knowing there were certain aspects of it I did not want to go into. One of the biggest things I'm afraid of with the third game is that there will be too much of the obvious horrible stuff for me, or that the option to turn the gore off won't be there. If that is that case, I won't play it, simple as that. Some games and movies it's easy to tell if it'll be something I won't be able to handle or don't like... others, it's not until playing or watching them that it comes up and I'm like, "Okay, not enjoying this anymore." LOL.
I think it's the writer in me that appreciates Gears of War more than anything. What appeals to me about it is the story behind the characters, the emotions behind dealing with not just war as we know it in reality, but the very fight for survival of the human race overall. I know there are other games out there like that, but I've never played one before GoW . It's like the X-Men universe, there are many concepts in the comics I can't stand and the best thing about running an RPG based on it is that I can leave those out entirely. All comes down to personal preference in the end really.
π: 0 β©: 1
Engineseer In reply to Mana4X2 [2011-01-25 08:44:00 +0000 UTC]
I think you're one of the few who sees Gears like that. Most people just see them as grunting meatheads who are only capable of expressing gallows humour or rage.
Many see the whole sub-plot with Dominic's wife as a hamfisted attempt to show that the series is about more than brutalizing aliens.
To a certain extent I'd agree with all that, but the games have enough implied backstory that I can imagine that there's more to the characters that just what is seen in the game.
As for the 3rd game well the lambent look really disturbing but the game critic in me can appreciate that they'll make interesting enemies to fight.
(The last boss of GoW2 really freaked me out, and anything that can't be killed even by the hammer of dawn is bound to scare even me.)
The irony is there's this one horror game I have trouble playing. It has no gore, very little blood. Almost no direct threat. You rarely encounter monsters, most of the horror is implied. On paper the game sounds totally tame yet when I play it, it scares the shit out of me so much I have trouble continuing.

Mana4X2 In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-25 10:36:05 +0000 UTC]
Lol, yeah, I can understand that, although I still don't think they are aliens but anyways... I've been reading the books by Karen Traviss and looked into backgrounds on Gearspedia so if one was interested enough *pints to herself* they'd be able to easily find out there is more than meets the eye to Gears of War.
Strangely enough, the Lambent don't bother me at all, even with all their 'blood' going all over the place. If it's not red it doesn't get to me... weird, I know and there again, all depends how much blood is in something too. Lambent Berserkers are definitely going to be something else and lol, Skorge freaked you out, I personally thought he was one of the best 'bad guys' ever. I'm a Sci-Fi/mutant/superhero fan through and through, just don't watch or play the stuff with too much gore or other things that I don't like.
*Chuckles* I've actually heard of a game like that... not much in the way of anything, mainly dark rooms, noises and not knowing what the heck is around the next corner. To me, that just proves the point can be put across without going into detail or being over the top. What game are you talking about btw?
π: 0 β©: 1
Engineseer In reply to Mana4X2 [2011-01-25 10:52:29 +0000 UTC]
I wasn't referring to Skorge. I was talking about the lambent Brumak. seeing that thing mutate into a giant....thing gave me the willies. (Although I can agree if you don't think it counts as a final boss. Firing the Hammer at it repeatedly hardly constitutes proper gameplay.)
The horror game I was talking about was Amnesia: The Dark Descent. (And yeah at it's core it's actually a puzzle game.) It is one of the few examples of a "true horror game" IMO. Real Horror means not understanding your adversaries or your situation as well as having no way to defend yourself.
Other games like FEAR and Dead Space have given me a fright but Amnesia definitely is the most scary game I've ever played.

Mana4X2 In reply to Engineseer [2011-01-25 11:16:16 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh, sorry for the misunderstanding. I agree it was scary but man I LOVED it! That was where I got the idea for Mana in Deployable Weapon . But yes, especially on Hardcore was it difficult to kill the thing.
Heard of that game and again, totally agree the best horror is when you're left going, "What's going on? Where is it? What... um, someone help me..." LOL. Can't remember the name of the one I've seen a YouTube video on, but it seemed to be like a puzzle as well. Might be the same one, lol.
Haven't heard much on FEAR but I know Dead Space is not for me... freaked out someone I know so bad he took it back. Based on that, yeah, no way in the world my friend!

Engineseer In reply to Mana4X2 [2011-01-25 13:10:10 +0000 UTC]
I've played through Dead Space. I thought it was pretty good, but yes Dead Space is not for the squeamish.
In fact one of the selling points of Dead Space 2 is that "your mom hates it."
The first FEAR game was interesting because inbetween encounters with rogue soldiers your character would be accosted by psychic visions. These were disturbing but ultimatly harmless. However in the second half of the game some of these visions actually CAN hurt you. It was totally freaky but a very nice twist. Sometimes I was glad to end up fighting "normal" enemies rather than sitting through another twisted hallucination.
