Currently, I only work on sketch portrait commissions (example ). I'll open 5-10 slots in February and it'll cost $40 for a 2 second chest-up portrait animation.

I had that idea too. This fella was originally designed to be the first another sentient mutant for Lydia to encounter. I like the idea of someone who looks annoyed but still helps even when he could have just walked away.

In her world, there is an apocalyptic event happening. Some alien infection turning every living being into a mutated monstrosity. Some mutants don't turn feral monsters but keep their minds. Lydia is one of the lucky ones. Because of a series of events she was separated from her parents when she got infected and now she's trying to get back to them.
I'm working on an animated short cartoon about it and planning to make at least one sometime next year.

Apologies for the random out-of-the-blue question, and I know it's been several months (4 to be exact) since you last submitted an animation, but I was just wondering what your thoughts on the possibility of using formats that are higher quality than GIF such as animated PNG and the like?

It's a bit complicated for me. Last time I tried to make an APNG file the quality was the same as GIF. I was thinking about making mp4 files but not every site I use supports looped videos. For now, I see GIFs as by far not perfect but the most suitable format for my short animations.

That's very odd that you found APNG to be the same quality since it's whole benefit is not being limited to 256 colors. And in fact, for images that have minimal movement, this can actually result in a smaller file size as well for APNG vs GIF.
Perhaps the issue was the software and/or method of exporting you used?
Now I've no idea what your PC software setup is, but the way I usually do things is via the program "APNG Assembler" which is pretty basic in that you simply input a series of static non-animated PNG images, set how long the frames should be displayed for, and then assemble into a single APNG.
Interestingly, the program "VirtualDub2" which is really a video editor can also export to animated PNG (it can actually do animated GIF as well, but that's not the point of this discussion

Most of my animations have less than 256 colors. Unless I'm using gradients.

Just note that, from my testing that I just did, it seems that VirtualDub2 doesn't compress its PNGs quite as well as APNG Assembler.
I was able to test this by simply running a VirtualDub2-created APNG through "APNG Optimizer" (which is already built into APNG Assembler) only for the resulting file size to be reduced from ~50KB to ~30KB.
(and to clarify, all of this is a lossless process)
So yeah...I guess VirtualDub2 isn't the greatest for final delivery in terms of animated PNGs, but the program is meant primarily for video stuff anyway (and it's great for exporting video frames as individual images!)
