Todella mukava kuulla. I'm not sure if I should type in English or Finnish, so I'm using English just in case. You're Croatian? Where did you learn Finnish? I think your Finnish seems actually rather good, except for some little mistakes with cases... But cases are always difficult, so no worries.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Suvetar In reply to Eralor [2009-06-11 22:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Kiitos!! It's nice to hear that! And thank you for typing in English, I don't understand Finnish so good, so it's better this way. Oh, cases are very difficult. Especially in Finnish, and I need to practice more... Btw, what was wrong in that sentence?

Opiskelin suomea kolme vuotta Zagrebissa (Kroatia), kurssilla. Ja olin kesΓ€kurssilla Savonlinnassa.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eralor In reply to Suvetar [2009-06-12 09:54:50 +0000 UTC]

There are so many cases in Finnish, more than in any other language I know. I'm happy that I don't have to learn them because they just come naturally to me... One of the joys of being a native speaker of Finnish is that I won't run across a language that's complicated when it comes to cases.

You asked what was wrong about the sentence you wrote... "Sinulla on ihana galleria", there's nothing wrong in that. "Monta kauniita maisemia", then... If you want to use partitive, then it should be "monia kauniita maisemia", or if nominative, then "monta kaunista maisemaa". You just mixed nominative and partitive, but that's not a big mistake and it's completely understandable since the difference between those cases is small. I hope my explanation makes sense...

By the way, how did you originally come up with the idea that you wanted to learn Finnish? And what other languages do you speak?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Suvetar In reply to Eralor [2009-06-12 11:28:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thanks, now I see my mistake... I wanted to write monia... but I didn't know partitive....

Well, I study Polish and Italian as main studies. I studied also Finnish and Norwegian (now I don't have time any more for Norwegian...). But my motivation for Finnish was:
1. I like all Scandinavia, and I think it's interesting part of Europe.. and I wanted to visit all Scandinavian countries... Nice way to visit some country is to know its language, so I decided to learn Finnish, and I went to Finland!
2. I wanted to learn some finno-ugric language, you know, it's much different from indo-european languages... (I learned Estonian too, but only half a year) So I chose Finnish, cause it seemed very interesting and nice... and different. And I knew it's difficult language but it was challenge to me..

So, I see you are a language lover too! I'm in high school now, so there are two languages I have to study, English and Swedish. And then, I'm also studying French and German. After high school I'll probably try to get into a university to study English and French further.

Swedish is a lot like Norwegian, so if you know one of them you can understand the other too. I'm not good in Swedish, because when I started studying it (at the age of 13), I wasn't interested of it at all, and so I didn't even learn all the basics. I do understand Swedish but can't speak it myself. I'm trying to improve my Swedish skills this summer, because I really have to, and want to be able to speak it. I would also like to study Norwegian, Icelandish, Greek, Italian and Russian. I would be the happiest person in the world if I could just study whatever languages I want and I wouldn't have to study anything else. Although I do like history and psychology too...

I know what you mean, the thing about visiting a country the language of which you know. I just returned from Italy where I was for 12 days, and I know maybe ten words of Italian! I felt a bit lost in a country where I didn't understand what people were talking about. Some I did understand, because Italian words are a bit similar to French ones, but that wasn't much. It was a nice experience anyhow.

Estonian is a beautiful language too, a lot like Finnish, although it may be even harder, I'm not sure because I haven't studied it. I've heard that Estonians learn Finnish easily, but Finns have more difficulties to learn Estonian. I have no idea why that is...

Suvetar In reply to Eralor [2009-06-15 03:54:47 +0000 UTC]

Hi again.

Well, I think Estonian IS harder to learn than Finnish. Oh, yes. Dunno why, maybe because it's more complicated, for example there are Finnish partitive endings (if I remember well) -a/Γ€, or -ta/tΓ€, and it's quite easy to remember - but in Estonian there are much more endings and some of them are irregular.... or in Finnish, there's change kk, tt, pp > k, t, p and k, t, p > -, d, v (right?) - but in Estonian you have one change more (but only in pronunciation, not in writing), and it makes the language much more complicated... and so one, and so one... I think it was the most difficult of all languages I've learned...

I see you're language freak too. That's nice and useful. And yes, it's true that if you know one language, it's much more easy to learn other languages... so I speak with Spanish people in Italian, with Swedish people in Norwegian and with Czech people in Polish.... It can be funny!

True! Of all the subjects you learn in school, languages are the most useful and fun. I just wish I had time to learn more languages. But I think I'll try to master German and French before trying anything new... Although I may start studying Italian on my own soon. Have you ever learned any language without going to courses or getting anyone to teach you? I really don't have time or money to go to courses, and besides, in my town there's no proper possibility to study Italian. I heard the grammar isn't very complicated, or is it? So I might be able to learn the basics on my own...

About those consonant changes - I've never had to think about them, but yes, the ones you mentioned (also the partitive endings) are right.

Suvetar In reply to Eralor [2009-06-16 20:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Only once I tried to learn a language on my own. It was internet course of Icelandic, and I tried with that, but I didn't have enough time to continue... For me is much more easier to go on a course of language (or some school) than to learn it on my own...

Italian is interesting because it's easy in the beginning but when you study it more and more it's much more complicated and difficult. Italian grammar, I mean. Fonetically is not so difficult (like French for example). I think you can learn basics on your own, or you can just try and see how it will go. It is similar to French but I think it's easier for beginning.. (unfortunately I don't know French, but I'd like to learn it too... ) For me Italian is difficult, but I study it four years, and we have to know all. Study of some language is much more difficult than the course...

Eralor In reply to Suvetar [2009-06-17 09:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. I see. I know, Italian is easy to pronounce, it's rather simple. French fonetics aren't so difficult either when you get into it. I can't say much about the grammar yet because I've only been studying French since last September. But this far it has been easy. Maybe not simple, but easy anyhow. There are lots of little things you have to remember, but I think it's much easier than German, for example. German is hard! For some reason Germanic languages are difficult to me. Swedish included. I think that's because their grammar is somewhat stiff, unlike in English or French. And all those declensions! I'm going nuts with them. :/

I don't think internet courses are a good idea. I thought about buying course books and studying from them... Hmmm. I don't know anyone who knows much about Italian, so if I try studying on my own and run across something I don't quite understand, can I ask you about it? I would be grateful.

Suvetar In reply to Eralor [2009-06-18 21:11:54 +0000 UTC]

I'd really like to learn French... Hope I'll have opportunity in the future.
I'm not sure if germanic languages are harder, but yes, German is difficult to study. I know some basics and that's it. Maybe I'll continue with German one day...
Hmmm, if you think German declinations are difficult to learn, try to learn slavic languages! We have 7 declinations as well as in Polish (and other slavic languages), and I think some pronunciation is quite difficult to you...

For me, Finnish is very difficult...
And of course you can ask me, I'll be glad to help you.. I don't know Italian great, but I think I can help you with some basics and some vocabulary... Feel free to ask me.
