Pig iron is raw iron, the immediate product of smelting iron ore with coke and limestone in a blast furnace. Pig iron has a very high carbon content, typically 4-5%, which makes it very brittle and not very useful directly as a material.
Pig iron is typically poured directly out of the bottom of the blast furnace into pots to form ingots. The ingots are then used to produce wrought iron or steel, typically with a Bessemer converter or basic oxygen furnace, by burning off the excess carbon in a controlled fashion.
The traditional shape of the molds used for these ingots was a branching structure, formed in sand, with many individual ingots at right angles to a central channel or runner, bearing some similarity in appearance to a litter of piglets suckling on a sow. When the metal had cooled and hardened, the smaller ingots (the pigs) were simply broken from the much thinner runner (the sow), hence the name pig iron. As pig iron is intended for remelting, the uneven size of the ingots and inclusion of a little sand was unimportant compared to the ease of casting and of handling. Modern steel mills, equipped as they are with large cranes, either cast large single ingots or transfer the molten iron to a ladle for immediate use as molten metal.
Cast iron is made by remelting pig iron, often along with substantial quantities of scrap iron, and taking various steps to remove undesirable contaminants and adjust the carbon content.
The Chinese were making pig iron by the later Zhou Dynasty (1122 BC - 256 BC). In Europe, the process did not become common until the 14th century.

YOU'VE BEEN HUGGED!
Spread the DA love around man!
*dingding* RULES:
1- You can, and should, hug the person who hugged you!
2- You can't hug the person more than once
3- You MUST hug atleast 6 other people
4- You should hug them in public! Paste it on their user page! C'mon...don't be scared of public displays of affection! (remember, public displays of affection mean less chance of lawsuits)
5- Random hugs are perfectly okay! (and pretty swell if you ask me)
6- You should most definitly get started hugging right away! Six hugs a day are equal to a full upper body work out - hug twelve people, and that's an entire body.
P.S. Hey! Try some random people to spread more of the DA love around - because as we know, randomness = community spirit ... and we all love community spirit (the community frowns down upon those who don't).
Have a nice day
NB: New, improved YOU'VE BEEN HUGGED: Now with grammar.

So yes, hello Dear Have whimsical weekend!

Do you have any plans for the weekend? I'm going for a long awaited haircut, doing homework and sleeping. See you later squirt.

Your welcome. I feel a bit invasive suddenly commenting, I hope you don't mind. Do you have so few journals and deviations because you left and came back again? I could have sworn I saw truckloads more of your work on Flow's computer. As for my anniversary here, I hadn't realised AT ALL -stupid- and I feel like muck because I haven't done a single thing so Im working on something...right now! So Thanks for the reminder More importantly is your life anniversary coming up wahey! I can't remember the exact date but I'm sure to hear about it.

haha, yep, that'd be today, and yeh, i left and then came back a few months later, that's why i have an unnecessarily large amount of pageviews and relatively little journals and deviations.

Mmm I did have a nose round of course, alot of messages and things. It's the third today and I have no idea what the time is in Canada, it's a safe bet that I missed your birthday by a mere 24hours but Happy twentieth! If I may rub it in you're getting old..yet newer to me and if I were cool I'd have panited you something or written a poem but I don't have it in me sorry that should do..!! I hope you did something special. By the way did you make it to any of the concerts you mentioned a while ago..Coldplay? I'm not fussed if you're too busy to reply it's charming that you have but I'm aware that I write alot. However Batman, Lois Lane needs saving.

actually i didn't do anything special, other than ordered fish and chips and rented the Incredibles, but i never really do anything for my birthday *shrugs*.
no, i didn't go to the Coldplay concert, the tickets sold out in under a minute *sob* however, it was only a buzz gig, and incidentally, the tickets to the proper gig in August go on sale tomorrow (Sat 4th) at 10am so i'm going to try to get those, it'll make up for the first one.
my regards to lois lane

Unless you had a particularly good time eating greasys and watching a cartoon film, then that's no way to spend your birthday William..Will, Wilbo? Certainly not Bill unless that name comes with age? Hope not. Anyway birthdays are uber important. What do you mean by a buzz gig? Personally I would be buzzing at any gig of theirs concidering we very rarely have descent musicians tour here. I soso hope you do get the tickets though, and you can tell me about it..briefly anyway! Oh your assistance please, what type of uh deviation, should I first submit? Silly question but i'm indecisive. Hmm regards..not kind regards atleast? Eeh who am I to interfere.

wilbo In reply to Falling-into-Grace [2005-06-04 13:57:45 +0000 UTC]
actually i love Fish and Chips, and the movie was awesome, i never like doing big things on my birthday, i'm not a party kind of guy. William is good, Will is alright, i don't really go by Wilbo, some people call me English, some call me Weemo, no one calls me Lliam, but i wouldn't mind it but NEVER Bill or Billy. a buzz gig is a small gig that is just to create "buzz" about the new album coming out (on the 6th). they're my second favorite band, and the tickets go on sale in three minutes so i'll have to quickly tell you that you should submit a drawing as your first deviation, *runs off*

Falling-into-Grace In reply to wilbo [2005-06-05 01:40:16 +0000 UTC]
Well I wasn't suggesting you had a huge party, that's going from one extreme to the other, but I wrongly sensed dissapointment when you seemed to shrug it off. I'm yet to see the Incredibles is it worth a watch? My cousin didn't seem to think so but she was off her face in the cinema at the time so I don't really trust her judgement. William it is, Lliam would confuse me with another person who I'd think I know but infact it's you. Radiohead your first favourite? Keeping in mind that i'm four years behind your abilities, I started on my drawing today using a mannequin for the figure which is heaps of fun!! It's a good start. Three minutes is a mighy short time I. . .doubt you would have made it if they sell out in less time.

I'll have to get it out then, actually I might just do that today. So you proved me wrong, you must be extatic! I felt that way when John Mayer came here, had a fit when I got the tickets for my birthday..i'm listening to the cds atm makes me dilariously happy. I'm going to submit something sooon, its simple, hopefully a good thing.

Bother..bother bother..I haven't got the CD yet, it's a long story but boils down to the fact that I have no money on hand..stupid formal. Because you -are- an all mighty 20 I don't want you to think that i'm a sixteen year-old no-brainer. So..you know one who certainly isn't but because I don't part take it highly thought-provoking discussions with you and have bad spelling it doesn't mean i'm not capable Anyway I should get some work done, hope you are well

Of course you're going to hear about it, like I could possibly let something as big as Batman's life anniversary go by without mentioning it atleast five or six times. With a side-dish of how many days and hours it's been since I got a word out of him.
See you six and a half hours ago.
