What website host are you using? If it's Webs (which I use), there's an easy way that doesn't involve HTML; I'm not as familiar with other hosts but if you're using one of those I'll still see if I can help

To make a static background, I believe you have a few different syntax options. After the HTML for the background image itself
Alternatively, you can also lump everything together in one tag:

Okay! Thanks! I didn't know there were other options besides hand-coding. I was surprised at how easy it was because I originally thought you had toΒ invent your own code, but then I discovered Adobe Kuler and the Bootstrap website lolΒ . It'sΒ actuallyΒ fun to hand-code.

Hi! You may absolutely use the conversation idea for your site. It actually wasn't even my idea -- I saw it on a few other fansites before I started my own and decided to use it, so no credit is needed, unless you want to!

That was an idea I got from at least one other site a long time ago, so you're absolutely free to use it! It does make things easy.
I agree with you that hand-coding has a certain appeal! I ought to do more of it -- it gives you lots more control than a default template does. My HTML/CSS skills aren't good enough to code an entire website from scratch, though. Default templates let you be lazy
