Afzal is one of the mysterious entities known as 'Shaded Ones', singularly referred to as a 'Shade'. No one is quite sure what they are or how they came to be. No Shade looks like another nor do they seem the have the same agenda, but there is a constant between all of them. They are empty. Crushing, despairing, agonizing emptiness that drives them to haunt. To shadow and kill just to fill them with something for even a moment.
Or so the 'experts' have said. In truth, they are the lost inhabitants of city that vanished into The Umbra years ago. You see, humans cannot live there. The Umbra alters whatever it comes into contact with and changes its form into something befitting of it. Quite different in both mind and body, these 'Shaded Ones' no longer remember being human. They cannot remember emotions aside from the one they felt the strongest in their life. It is this emotion that drives them, that determines their actions.
And of course, the 'experts' know this. For it is their fault. They who used the city as bait in a trap. They who sealed away The Umbra by sacrificing the citizens of that city. For if the city was empty, The Umbra would not come.
No one must ever know, they believe. And so no one must ever discover the truth of the 'Shaded Ones'.
Afzal is one of these 'Shaded Ones'. His emotion is loneliness. Because he lacks any memories of his humanity, he lacks understanding of this emotion. He takes to 'haunting' people by 'becoming' their shadow. Really, he just moves into it like someone would move into an apartment. He follows them in this way in an attempt to ease this ache he feels for a reason he does not understand.
These 'Shaded Ones' are normally shrouded in black mist that seems to pour from them. This black 'mist' is a form of The Umbra, and is what they are comprised of. Though they are quite capable of solidifying themselves and when they do it, it appears to disperse, though in actuality it's merely retreating back inside of them. They are capable of hiding inside any shadow as shadows are gateways to The Umbra. though they can be identified as the shadow will be slightly darker in the place they are located. To determine whether or not your shadow is being occupied, compare it to the shadow of the person next to you. If it's darker than theirs, there is a good chance it's occupied. Also, anyone in tune with the supernatural will see the occupant of a shadow standing behind the person when seeing their reflection in a reflective surface. Their weakness is darkness and they actively avoid it, though most people are unaware. The Umbra is a shadow, and a shadow cannot exist without light to cast it. Without light, they become as vulnerable as a human and are able to be killed. Also, they will be expelled from any shadow that ceases to exist. In other words, if there is no light.
Umbra-dwellers need The Umbra. They don't need to eat or sleep or breathe, though they can. Instead it's like they have an internal battery that only charges when they are inside The Umbra. If this 'battery' were to die, they would as well.
