Thanks for the faves. Good luck on your Parelli journey. It's a wonderful program. Have you heard of Karen Rohlf? She has written some wonderful stuff about merging the natural horsemanship world and the dressage world. She gives clinics to both Parelli students and dressage students, and I think it's absolutely wonderful how she's trying to bridge that "normal vs. natural" gap that seems to exist.

I've heard the name before, sounds really neat!
Do you do Parelli?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jen2Cal In reply to FoxTrotDesigns [2008-07-25 01:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I mostly do Parelli. Only mostly, as I was really into it at one point (like 100% Parelli devoted student) and was quite determined to officially assess level 3, but lately I haven't been playing with it so much. Of course, it really depends on how you look at "doing Parelli"...though I don't follow the levels program as completely as I once did, I would still say that their principles are ingrained into me so much, that I could never go against them.

I think my enthusiasm died a little when I got stuck moving on to old level 2/level 3 stuff. They're coming out with something new at the UK conference in August, and I'm really hoping that it's a new level 3 pack, or the equivalent of it (as they don't seem to be supporting the level's system as much anymore).

If you're interested in talking to any other Parelli folks, my friend, Jessie, is a Parelli fanatic. Right now she has goals to become a Parelli Professional. ~Desiderando is her name on dA.

This is Karen Rohlf's website: [link] and if you search her name on youtube, she has two really awesome videos of her and her horses.

I could probably go on for a long time about my experiences and my horses and anything equine, really, so I'll stop typing here.

Awesome, thanks for the links! Yeah,I have a friend that's finished up her Level II and is trying to transition to Level II but is having a hard time with how the material is presented. She's hoping they come out with a new Level III as well, lol.

I used to do Frank Bell Natural Horsemanship and while I do mostly Parelli, I combine some of the Frank Bell with the Parelli from time to time.

Just curious, what do you think of the Parelli's cradle bridle? I'm not fond of it myself but have had some Parelli people tell me I need to get it for my horse once I start bridling him. I'm trying to get various Parelli people's opinions on it, lol.

Jen2Cal In reply to FoxTrotDesigns [2008-07-25 12:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh....the cradle bridle. Well, I don't really feel entitled to give an opinion as I've never used it myself. But I guess you could take that as what I think of it. I've had no problem spending my money on every one of their learning packs...but I haven't spent that money on the cradle bridle. I think a horse should be able to be soft no matter what you have on their head, whether it's nothing or the ugliest bit you've ever seen. So, I guess I think it's ridiculous that they want you to buy a bridle to make your horse improve. Besides, have not those bits been out there for ages, and Parelli used to say how buying a different bit didn't make a difference? Okay, I guess I was pretty opinionated after all. Heh.

Whatever bridle you choose to go with, the rope reins are definitely worth it. They add so much feel and make it very easy to slide your hand softly to ask for flexion (be it lateral or vertical).

Are you a savvy club member? While I'm not the greatest fan of the bridle/bit changes, I think they're doing very well at coming out with new material lately. I feel like I can watch segments with Pat and hear new things instead of the same stories he's repeated 50 times, so that's nice.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only person that doesn't like the look of the cradle bridle. I've been thinking when I do bridle my guy I'll just stick with a plain snaffle. I've been thinking about getting the rope reins, they look like they'd be really nice. I just became a Savvy Club Member about a month ago.

Oh yeah...I didn't even mention how ridiculous that string down the middle of the horses face looks.

Yes...I wholeheartedly advise rope reins. If you're going to use a regular bridle you might like: [link] because they have a normal attachment method, in case you don't like the snaps or the really floppy...uhhh...can't think what they're called right now...brain failure....anyway, the other parelli reins that have the really big leather attachments that flop around a lot and can be a bother to some horses. So yeah....

FoxTrotDesigns In reply to Jen2Cal [2008-07-26 02:50:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the link, again. I have a regular bridle and that would save some money if I just got the clip on rope reins to attach to the headstall.

Yep, Parelli all the way lol. I started it back in February and it's helped me so much with my horse it's crazy. I've never gotten the chance to go to one of his clinics, that's so cool that you got to go!

It wasn't a clinic, though he did help one beautiful Paint mare that had jacked herself up in a trailer. But it was more of...hmmm, getting the word out about him. What they demonstrated was amazing.

Only one of them is mine(Mocachee). Some are horses from the barn where I teach and board my horse and some are from the equine rescue center where I volunteer(and where my horse came from).
