from your descriptions of your work you mention "AP" teachers ... which makes me assume you're in or were recently in High School ...
I'm not anyone who's amazing at art or anything ... but I am studying to be an art teacher ...
I hope you realize how much privilage you have for being able to study art in High School ... and I hope you don't mistaken your privilage for your own accomplishments ... not saying you haven't worked hard, just that you have help ... which have you ever seen graffiti and paintings kids make from really unprivileged areas? ... I mean I'm going into art myself and am from a suburban area and my school hardly had a single art class ... ... so yeah ... your very blessed ... I hope you appreciate it ... because I know my parents and the parents of about 90% of the people I now would have done just about anything to have had that kind of privilage for their kids, if given the opportunity ...

There are quite a few kids in my college who've never had an art program at their high school. It's clear that these people are very talented, but their work simply isn't quite there yet because they were never "educated". I know I would be just like them given the circumstances, and for this I am very grateful for what my high school has offered.
At the same time, I wouldn't base things 100% off of the school. I went out of my way to study art elsewhere over the summer for the past four years. In the one program I was mainly in, there were kids from all over the state. Most of which from the city. Their high schools didn't offer a lot either, but like myself, they discovered this program and pursued it. The program is run by the state education department, and financial aid is offered for the students who need it. (such as myself, just so you know) All it came down to was applying for the program and passing a portfolio review. What these people were looking for was raw talent moreso than "educated execution".
But as far as art education goes, it consists mainly of assigning a subject matter and having the students draw it. There are few basic skills to be learned... most, if not all of them can be self-taught. Talent does have a lot to do with it. There will be groups of kids who have taken all of the same art classes together throughout the years, all taught the same things, yet still have different levels of quality in their work. But ultimately a person's ability will be the result of how much time they have spent working with the materials. Personally my schooling helped me in that respect because I had very little time outside of class to work on art. Those kids who don't have the education as well as not having the time to work on their own lose out. In that respect I consider myself the luckiest girl in the world.
I don't take responsibility for what I've been given. I know I definitely had more opportunities than a lot of people, but I still don't think it's fair for you to say my ability was handed to me on a silver platter, sorry.

No probs. It's Illustration. (: I don't consider myself cut out for Graphic Design, and Fine Arts is a dead end... so it seemed like a good compromise.

I'm sorry for not really commenting a lot, too. My watchlist was starting to get up to 800 deviations a couple weeks ago, so I finally decided to sift through them all. @_@ I only was able to comment on a couple, though. Now it's back up to 200, again. Oh well. It's that busy time of the year for everyone, it seems.
