It seems so. I never thought a chiptune remix of all things would get any attention.

You doubt the magic of ska, my friend. Just listen to "Hey Homies" by the Aquabats.

I guess I did.
I've actually heard this. A friend of mine saw the Aquabats at a festival a year or so ago. The warped tour, I think? He got this single afterwords. It's certainly very fun.

I think they were on the Warped Tour not too long ago. That and touring with Reel Big Fish (and Goldfinger and Suburban Legends)

Yeah, my friend definitely saw them on Warped Tour. Yet another band that seems like they'd be fun to see live. I think it might be redundant to say that it's fun to see a ska band live. Goes without saying and all that.

Yup, ska bands have more fun. Simple as that. In fact, I'll be seeing SL again at Disneyland next week.

Sounds fun.
I spent most of my day today trying to convince my band director to replace the jazz combo with a high school ska band. Considering the way the combo's gone the last two years, I might be able to make it happen.

I'm shooting for it. My only concern is that ska sheet music/tab is hard to come by, and I don't know how many people in the band can play by ear.

Well, ska is quite easy to learn/pick-up/enjoy.

GoodStNero In reply to Closer-To-The-Sun [2012-08-26 02:19:52 +0000 UTC]
That it is. But my school band doesn't have many people that are good at playing anything besides sheet music.

I might have to.
First things first, I have to get a group together. I've got someone for keys and bass, maybe drums, and I can cover guitar. One of us could probably also cover vocals. The only problem is finding competent brass players who're willing to put the effort in. I also need to make sure I have the band director's support, if we're doing it as a high school club.

Try some saxes too. The Skank Agents and The Bohunks have them in and do well. Low brass is recommended and trumpets nice (but not exactly needed as much as the lower horns). I wish I could help ya out, I just found my old trombone.

GoodStNero In reply to Closer-To-The-Sun [2012-08-27 23:21:51 +0000 UTC]
We don't have any saxes that could do it, unfortunately. I did want one, but oh well.
I'm pretty excited. I've got a few people to express interest, so we've got two guitars, a bass, drums, keys, vocals, and a trombone. Trying to get a trumpet, or maybe a mello for the lulz. All that's really left is to get the all-clear from the band director, and pick songs.

My knowledge of ska is still fairly small, so if you can recommend any songs that you think would be good for us to try, that'd be a big help.

Alright, sit on down so I can drop some knowledge on you.
It's always good to start off with covers if you ask me, so you can experiment with both your music, style and what not. That, and ska covers are more fun. Take Reel Big Fish for example:
"Take On Me" originally by a-ha
"Brown Eyed Girl" originally by Van Morrison
"I Won't Back Down" originally by Tom Petty
"Another Day In Paradise" originally by Phil Collins
"The Promise" originally by When in Rome
But, of course, Reel Big Fish is far from the only band to do ska covers, as you know. But ska covers are basically reworking the song to be more fun and upbeat, despite having dark lyrics or otherwise.
"99 Red Balloons" by Goldfinger, originally by Nena
"One Step Beyond..." by Madnes, originally by Prince Buster
"Sweet Emotion" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, originally by Aerosmith
"It's My Life" by No Doubt, originally by Talk Talk
"Vacation" by Flight 180, originally The Go-Go's
"Leaving On A Jet Plane" by Slightly Stoopid, originally by John Denver
"Skyscraper" by Streetlight Manifesto, originally by Bad Religion
"Such Great Heights" by Streetlight Manifesto, originally by The Postal Service
"Peddlers/Pedorazu" by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, originally a traditional Russian folk song
"Just Can't Wait To Be King" by Suburban Legends, originally from the Lion King film
"Scarlet Begonias" by Sublime, originally by The Grateful Dead
The point is, I think you get the idea that covers are welcome in ska. In fact, the last show I went two shows I went to, Hooray For Our Side played a cover of Ben Folds Five's "Army", The Skank Agents covered Vanessa Carlton's "Thousand Miles", and the Aquabats covered Strong Bad's "Trogdor".
Just have fun when picking songs. Be unique about it. If you'd like, I can pick a few that I think that would be awesome as ska covers.

Neat. I was honestly thinking of picking out ska songs to get people started (I've gathered lots of interest, but not a lot of people know exactly what they're signing up for), but doing ska covers would be a great way to get people in on it. And yeah, I'd love your input if you have ideas.
Also, the Aquabats covering Trogdor sounds like the best thing ever.

Well, if you want some more input for ska music originals if you want, I can give some ideas (other than Suburban Legends, you can pick your favorites).
"Spiderwebs" by No Doubt
"Don't Speak" by No Doubt
"You Can Do It" by No Doubt
"Would You Be Impressed" by Streetlight Manifesto
"Corporate Control" by Sunny Side Up
"Gangsters" by The Specials
"What I Got" by Sublime
"2AM" by Slightly Stoopid
"Wiseman" by Slightly Stoopid
"Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish
"Where'd You Go?" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
"The Impression That I Get" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
"Got The Time" by Joe Jackson
"All My Best Friends Are Metals Friends" by Less Than Jake
"Spokesman" by Goldfinger
"Superman" by Goldfinger
"Hey Homies!" by The Aquabats
"Pizza Day" by The Aquabats
"Pool Party" by The Aquabats
"My Town" by Buck-O-Nine
And to lean more to punk:
"Why Don't You Get A Job" by The Offspring
"Roots Radicals" by Rancid
"Time Bomb" by Rancid
Also, I suggest you guys learn to skank.
(And Matt Chapman actually went on stage to sing with them)

You are a champion.
I got the go-ahead from the band director today. I have a tendency to tell her every single idea I have that's music related, so when I said "we should have a ska band instead of/in addition to the second jazz band", she just thought I was kidding. I told her that we were having a preliminary meeting tomorrow, and she was kind of shocked that I'm actually planning on going through with it, but she's willing to let us use school equipment/practice space/name if we can get up and going. Just gonna sit down with a few of the people I've got to see what we can work out and decide on. All of your help is super appreciated. I think I can really get this going.
