-the βgay/trans panicβ defense is illegal in only twelve states.
-gay conversion therapy is legal in thirty states.
-Delaware and New Jersey are the only states with a statutory minimum marriage age of 18 years, whilst all others possess some exception, in which case minors can be married to adults under the following circumstances:
*parental consent (46 states)
*judicial consent (17 states)
*pregnancy (7 states)
What this means, is that in the case of what may otherwise be tried as statutory rape, could instead be turned into a marriage. Furthermore, under the Immigrant and Nationality Act, there is no minimum age requirement for a spouse or fiancΓ©, and the USCIS does not require evidence that a minor had parental or judicial consent. These laws feed into child marriage of majority young girls to older men. This does not mean young boys are exempt either, although 86 percent of children married to adults in the United States are girls, most between the ages of 14 and 17. Within marriage, laws for statutory rape do not exist. These loopholes allow for the exploitation of both young girls, boys, and immigrant children.
-Arkansas and Alabama banned gender affirming care for trans youth. Misconceptions about gender affirming care for trans youth include:
*sex reassignment surgery. It will not be performed on a minor. There have been a few cases of mastectomy performed on late teen trans men, these are rare exceptions and were deemed to be life saving treatment.
*hormones are not administered to children. Very young children may transition socially, in how they dress or wish to be called. Older children may be given puberty blockers, which will stop them from going through the puberty of their assigned sex, in favor of their true gender.
*hormones will be administered to teenagers, who speak with therapists and psychiatrists before getting a prescription. They donβt just give them out to anyone who says they identify as a different gender now.
*these treatments are in many cases life saving, and make the lives of trans youth easier.
-15 other states currently review bills to ban gender affirming care for trans youth as well
Continuing on, The United States is not the only country in the world, so look at some global stats:
-11 countries (of 195 recognized countries) have full constitutional protection of the LGBT
-70 feature broad, but not constitutional, protections
-43 feature no protection, as well as no criminalization
-de facto criminalization in Egypt and Iraq
-imprisonment in 30 countries
-all the way up to life in 27
-death penalty is an option in 6, enforced in 5
-in only 27 countries is same-sex marriage allowed. Some may think this is meaningless because itβs just a marriage, but there are many legal benefits to being married to your partner.
This mainly touches on LGBTQ issues, but I would recommend some reading on the history of racism in America as well. While our legal system appears to be fair, our history provides for lasting negative effects. Redlining is a relevant topic in this case.
