Busy days! And now I'm back on cs4 in all..... should help when I want to LARK ABOUT in illustrator

All depends on my mood, but a more minimal composition can lead to some better ideas on how to expand, or even go further down the minimal road! Also, texture and shadow are catching my eye a bit too.

What's going dowwwwwwwwwwwwwn at your end?

adventfont In reply to HMSpeedFreek [2010-02-21 01:17:47 +0000 UTC]

good to hear a optimistic logical cry on the other end! i wish you find that spark your looking for man!
im fine here, greece as you know, well i was thinking upon some philosophical questions recently that kinda widened my view about what is really happening with the web as we know it, by looking at all those major corporations like google, i found some shared behaviors that are widely ignored, so after some thinking i came up with a model, basically its something like an effort/reward model, funny stuff happens when you put that in numbers you know!
I am also trying to level a bit with the developing side of life (php, as, js ) to see if i can cope with it, currently its working out with a medium learning curve. Trying to launch inde and looking for people in greece with whom i could collaborate. I always support new branches in knowledge! You should tinker with illustrator for sure man! Its the best that will happen to you since your last one-night stand! Really it helps a lot in various levels.

Sparks will fly, or at least they ought to at some point!

Share some thoughts of your new philosophy and model?

Hmmm... I once did try html and css, sort of found my around~ But soon stopped. Never tried going as far as those *real* programming languages, nor flash, though I had it lying around for a bit. So much there to do, but no time to do it in! There are some other Greek designers I've seen on da, but you probably've seen them too? Some cool things, Japanese colour prints, Hokusai and that, great line quality that I think can convert well into vector graphics. Also, it's great for any sort of calligraphic ideas, brush and paths can be so nice.

adventfont In reply to HMSpeedFreek [2010-02-21 17:38:53 +0000 UTC]

Hello, well the model is kinda of some numbers i run regarding the work i did for advent and the reward collected (non-monetary as the font is free).

The downloads are nearly 200.000 so lets say that we have one target group named "A" this target group is the average graphic designer looking for a font, lets also mention that he spent 5 minutes to find the font and download it. This makes up the number 100,000,000 minutes that i saved from designer labor time.

Lets also assume that the cost of an average font = 20$ and by request i got per day, to purchase the font (still gave it for free) = 1 and people who downloaded the font per day (average) 250 we got a modest number of 20$ per day (really roughly calculated). So 200.000 / 250 = 800 thus 800$ for my 3 year work that was 2,000 work-hours per year x 3 years - (1/3 drop each year) = 2 000 + (2 000 / 2) + (2 000 / 3) = 3 666.66667 work hours....

I got "paid" 800$ for 3,666work hours! Cool eh?!

BUT

By my choice to give the font for free i spent 3,666 *work hours to save 1,666,666 *hours of designer time!

...

So i extended my reach and got rewarded by 1,666,000 - 3,600 = 1,662,400 hours! and 20$ is a good average hourly rate...
1,662,400 x 20 = 33,248,000$ // this is what i call virtually rich!

...

Furthermore lets say there are 3 types of labor:

1= make less gain more
2= gain as much as you make
3= gain less than you make

Ok, i gave the font for free and even though i got no money, my collateral exposure cost 33,248,000$
but if i sold it i would get just 800$ !

It stimulated my cock!

So i took this further on...

What does youtube do?

It creates happy slaves!
They present a platform as something that helps you broadcast and what really happens is that the members actually work for them!

So it is actually harnessing that collateral exposure cost! because you own the time that people spent!

If i am wrong somewhere please correct me.

HMSpeedFreek In reply to adventfont [2010-02-22 01:39:51 +0000 UTC]

That some dense figuring! Shame that time doesn't equate wealth on the creators side You may own the time, but I think that's only in an abstract sense of 'owning', then again, isn't ownership an abstract concept?

Could always do a donation system thing, or a pay what you think fit for the font~

Advent really has become a download hit, but do you see it used all over the place as you might expect with d/l figures like that?

adventfont In reply to HMSpeedFreek [2010-02-22 16:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Well on the contrary, the font is used, you can see "faved" works and other such stuff in my favorites page, also i have been mailed with a lot of material that the font is used. The problem here isnt the font, its a general object that is under broadcast. The whole idea is abstract yes i agree, there is no actual ownership of anything, i also agree, but theoretically speaking the results are hilarious!

Also to continue the theory i would like to take the matter to the "platform" system. Consider facebook, as a mass media machine, the platform gives the opportunity to a large number of people ignorant of the systems magic "back-end".. to create content for the site. At the same time, the system scans your profile and categorizes you to even more detailed target grouping than just your age and gender. After that they serve you with advertising that suits you, in other words gives you whatever you would most likely accept from an advertising campaign database. Another extension of that is the internet politics we see that exist! Did you know that Hitler used the radio when he saw that he was loosing followers? Imagine he had the ability to communicate his message personalized to each of his followers taste...

So in other words, we think we are expressing but what really happens is that we are working for revenues of others, without a cut!
