Click on the "+ Add Media" below the box when you write a comment and search for specific emoticons.
Write for example "hug" and you'll get several options:       etc.

There are several ways. 

Here are some examples:
 comment on other people's work to get noticed
 give llamas to random deviants to get noticed
 favourite other peoples works to get noticed
 draw consistently (maybe every other week a new picture or something like that)
 be unique in your own way  

And the most important of all:
 Be nice!

Look at the upper right corner of a profile page and click the "Give" option. Click on the "Give a llama" (it's free).
Llama badges are very famous on dA and many collect them (me included)
