How do you send private messages? I totally forgot. T_T
Don't worry about it too much, I haven't gotten that far on my super-fantastic analytical essay because of school. But I can tell you my request won't be anywhere near as complicated as your last request. ^^

I do appreciate your kind words as well.. I'm merely afraid, I don' know the exact meaning of "steampunk" .. I wonder if I could ask you to explain it to me
kind regards. AdA

Sure, I had to google "steampunk" myself a while back because I knew what I associated with it but I wasn't sure what the concrete definition was. It's like a subset of gothic/romantic culture that emphasizes and integrates history and technology. Kind of like movies like The Golden Compass where you have this idea of fantasy meets invention.
I knew a while ago that "steampunk" people wore goggles and long trenchcoats and dreadlocks but I couldn't figure out anything else beyond that. @_@
"Philosophicum" integrates these really nostalgic colors and fractal art. The colors remind me of an old globe which is why I clicked on it at first, I didn't really know what it was. The fractal making software adds the technological component because fractals are rather recent. ^^
But that's just my opinion, I don't really know much about steampunk, just that I like the visual art aspect of it.
I'm fascinated by fractals actually, but the whole concept is just overwhelming. I haven't been able to find a concrete definition of what a fractal is in laymen's terms. I download Apophysis the other day and after I opened it, things happened. I was like woah. 0_o

thank you very much for the explanation. it really was a great help to me
technological progress, whereas traditions must be maintained - I think a descrition like that goes well with a "philosophicum". So, steampunk could absolutely be a proper association.
I love these fractals too. unfortunately I know very little about them. Nonetheless I am convinced that it is essential to understand all these formulas as well and to know some theoretical background to really be able to create meaningful pictures with fractals.
Apophysis is definitely a practical tool. However it seems to me, it produces merely figures that are all alike. I believe that in digital arts the main question is how to compose a picture, using many a layers, such as drawings, fractals etc. I cannot see any artistic quality merely in using a complex formula, despite of the beautiful shapes it might create.
well, I've decided to try to do some more "steampunk".. that's quite an interesting style..
d'you intend to upload some deviations too? D'you actually prefer traditional arts or digital arts??

Yes, in high school we had an assignment in Geometry class where we had to find information on the internet about fractals. To this day I still don't understand what a fractal is, all websites explain it in mathematical terms. Maybe I have trouble understanding because fractals have a three dimensional component to them. Once we started doing 3D things in calculus I think I gave up.
I do agree that fractals need to be layered and manipulated in order to have meaning. It's like when some artists take pictures of the stars or of the sunset. It's pretty but there's no meaning, there's nothing to think about. Beyond the superficial visual aspect those types of images tend to be very sterile. It's like you say, just a formula.
I'm really inspired by your artwork. I signed up on DA because I realized that there are some very talented fan artists. I remembered from a few years back seeing lots of images that were malformed stick figures or other hopeless attempts with comments like "Woah, that's so cute" or whatever. -_- Many artists didn't want critiques of their art, just ego boosting comments. But I see that there are talented people if you can look for and find them.
I personally like both traditional and digital art. Honestly I think the learning curve is much easier with digital art because it's much easier to play around and fix mistakes. With traditional art if you make a mistake you usually have to start over again, which can be extremely frustrating and discouraging. I prefer combining the two.
I do want to post some artwork. Tomorrow's my last day of classes so I'll finally have time to work. Art is just too absorbing to do during the semester. I have some really nice photographs that I took in Germany that I'd like to use but I'm going to Europe again this summer so hopefully I'll have thousands of pictures to use as inspiration!
My goal is to try and capture an emotion I can't quite name. Thinking back on certain things I remember from when I was a child, the world seemed much more intriguing back then. The beauty in such a memory isn't the physical aspect but the thoughts and feelings associated with it, and photography alone can't capture it. It's like the difference between seeing a picture of a sunset and actually sitting in front of one. I think that's why steampunk is gaining popularity, that sort of nostalgic look at a past time. Before I read about it, I never thought technology could have a nostalgic aspect, maybe it's because of movies like the matrix that portray technological progress in a very bleak manner. I'm a more optimistic person. ^^

I really agree upon your idea that it is to be aimed to capture what cannot be named - by artistic means. and arts without emotion seems like a song without music to me.
as for fractals, maybe the biggest difficulty is, to have them carrying emotions. that's also why I think it's necessary to know some theoretical background. d'you think that randomness alone can express emotions as well?? - as for me, I'm not certain about that. I even doubt it.
well, so you also create non-digitl art?? that's great, I do envy you as you mentioned - it's probably more comfortable to become familiar with digital arts. however I'm convinced it always remains a question of patience, knowledge, talent and purposefulness to create a masterpiece, whatever kind of art you chose.
I've seen many a good artists here on DA - that is, as far as I can consider it. it's odd, but I scarcely think that visiting this site was a waste of time (to idle around facebook on the contrary IS definitely a waste of time).. even though there's lotsa rubbish here as well. but wherever you go, it's better to care for the interesting things than to lapse into criticising..
hm. are you into music as well?? I really love to seek connections between pictures and music. for me, both are compositions. in music it refers to time whereas in pictures the composition is a momentum. queerly, there are a few very interesting connections that melt the boarders that separate a moment from a chronological sequence. these are illusions. (I hope it is possible to follow my views, for my English is indeed very poor.. illusions - what I really intend to say is, there are some artists, who have managed to successfully play around with such illusions. Ligeti for example - here you are a good example: [link] )
well. there's so much to write about..
have a nice weekend ^^

Hello, I wonder if you remember me?
After school ended I thought I would have time to work on some art but I didn't get to visit as many places as I thought I would. But now I decided I can't let academics distract me from art. So I'm going to try and refocus. ^^
