I currently use the sculpy brand and as long as you don't leave the jar open for too long and as long as you put a lot of thin coats on instead of a few think ones it works nicely. I have a jar of varnish from the store but I haven't tried it yet.

I think most people just add too much too fast without giving it time to dry properly, I have had problems with it drying foggy if the room is too cold.
