Hey! 50/50 I'd say? After coming up with an idea and laying out the poses and composition I'll look for references to essentially confirm what I'm going for (this may involve contorting myself in front of a mirror lol). Things like a harsh shadows across a face - I'll hunt for a similar effect and use it as a guide to know that what I'm building, even though heavy in fantasy is built of some kind of realism to give it more credibility if that makes sense?

Hey, when you use your pencil colors, is it best to draw big so that the colors look more correct? I've been practicing with pencil colors, but on a much smaller scale, and I often end up with pencil smudged and sloppy-like color textures. Also does the kind of paper play an important role? Thanks for any info.
