After Reach, Nick's going to wear that. The right shoulder plate is removed to make it easier to aim his sniper rifle. The left shoulder plate is enlarged to make a shield to protect that arm, like a small shield

Yeah, unlike Nick's current armor in the story, the ODST BDU, this is a specialized version of it.
ODST Sharpshooter BDU. The sharpshooter BDU is issued to sniper experts in the field. This BDU is designed to give an ODST sharpshooter more freedom in combat - the standard right pauldron is removed, allowing the sniper to aim better and move his arm more freely with a sniper rifle, while the standard left pauldron is replaced with a larger plate to protect the sniper's arm from counter attacks. The sharpshooter variant is also issued with an O/I (ocular/integration) optics device attached to the helmet, while the Oracle scope on the SRS99 can be smart-linked to the user's HUD.
It perfectly fits his role as a rifleman/sniper.

The Fall of Reach, the series of battles before Nick gets his new armor. Sorry about the slow response, making sure I didn't reveal everything.
Mrs. Wilde was immensely worried about her son, as he had now been in the war for about 6 years. In fact, she nearly had a heart attack when Nicholas called one day with a bleeding gash under his left eye; the round from a Brute Spiker having narrowly missed impaling him. Prejudice against foxes hadn't diminished at all in Zootopia, with her husband having died of an illness when Nick was young and Nicholas fighting off-planet she had been kicked out of her apartment due to being "let go" from her workplace due to "budget cuts" and even Nick sending home most of his military income wouldn't cover the suddenly increasing rent...no one wanted to work with a fox....well...almost no one. The one who hired her also provided a home for her.
"How are the blueberries growing?" Stu Hopps asked, rubbing underneath his hat as Mrs. Wilde glanced at the blueberry bush with large dark blue berries.
"So Nick, how are things going?" Judy asked, nervously twisting her ears over her shoulder as she gazed at the Muzzletime screen on the computer.
"Why Carrots, trying to get information before the others arrive?" Nick said, smirking as she shifted shyly. She glanced at Nick before she gave a smirk of her own.
"Perhaps."
"And you are the one who tries to Muzzletime me everyday." Nick said, standing up and revealing his chest-plate, which had a small chunk missing on the top right of it. There were scratches covering the surface of the shoulder-plates and chest-plate with sections of the chest plate scorched black from plasma burns. The helmet next to him had a deep scratch above and below the left side of the visor. This was the sight Stu, Bonnie, and Mrs. Wilde walked in to.
"I've been redeployed to the planet Reach." Nick said, "And that assignment wasn't done empty handed either."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Stu said.
"Well, now you're looking at Lieutenant Wilde." Nick said as he rubbed his right paw against his chest-plate proudly.
"Oh my goodness Nick! That's awesome!" Judy said, hopping in place slightly as she clapped. Nick's mother smiled at her proud son as he sat back down in front of the chair. "Mom...promise me that you'll do something safe like, I don't know...sell popsicles or something, farming, anything."
On the Planet Reach, Nick gazed at his helmet as he mounted a small camera to the top of it, right over the visor. He gazed at the one human and one lion in the Alpha 7 division, or what was left of it. Three soldiers out a five-man division, with forces being too spread thin to replace the missing personnel.
"Winter Contingency. The Covenant are on Reach." The human said.
"And Reach is the last major military stronghold between the Covenant and Earth, along with my own world." Nick said.
Inside the visor, a screen popped up with his mom, Judy, and Mr. and Mrs. Hopps there with the words "Muzzletime connected". He moved the screen to the side using his neural link connection to his helmet, enough so he could see both the group and the battle.
"Bad time guys." Nick said.
"Wait. Why's this a bad time?" Stu asked.
"Moving signal to external camera." Nick said, right before Kat (aka "Noble 2") spoke over the communications; clearly visible to the muzzletime-ing mammals.
"On my mark..." a few seconds later, Nick's head turned to see a tower exploding on a cliff overlooking an armada of Warthogs and Scorpion Main Battle Tanks along with Falcon helicopters.
"Oh sweet cheese and crackers!" Judy shouted witnessing the feed.
"Incoming!" A marine shouted as purplish-pink Covenant Banshee planes flew overhead, raining down plasma shots on the group. Nick's driver swerved to barely avoid the attack as a Warthog next to them exploded. A bridge came into sight and the first Warthog drove across it, followed by Nick's Warthog. Right when they crossed the bridge, the bridge exploded and the shock-wave sent Nick's Warthog spinning out of control on the other side of the bridge. The Warthog then tilted over and started rolling; the seat-belts snapping and tossing the soldiers within it out of the vehicle. "Cut chat!" Nick shouted, ending the Muzzletime. Behind them, a Warthog slammed into the ground after jumping the bridge before a piece of it flew off and slammed into Nick.
Pulling up Muzzletime, he moved the camera in his helmet to an external feed device he installed. He could see the relieved faces of his mom and Judy, with Stu and Bonnie Hopps sharing some tea in the background.
"Sorry about the cut off." Nick started, but was cut off when Judy's face filled the Muzzletime screen.
"Are you okay? We saw the car flip!"
Reducing the screen size, he chuckled "Bruised, but alright."
"Spire 1 is clear." Carter's voice broke over the speaker.
"Affirmative. All units be advised, Frigate-Three-One-Eight-Heavy is inbound, and MAC rounds have been authorized." A commander's voice replied.
"MAC rounds? In atmosphere?" Jorge asked in disbelief.
"One way to get their attention. Hang onto your teeth!" Carter said before the ground shook as a white bean left the front of the frigate and shattered the Spire.
Right as soldiers cheered, a blue beam of condensed plasma ripped through the top of the frigate's midsection and exited the bottom, nearly ripping it in two.
"New contact; High Tonnage." An AI unit spoke as the Grafton had explosions tearing it apart as it started falling to the ground below.
"No. Someone tell me this ain't happening!" Jorge and Nick unknowingly spoke at the same time.
"Frigate-318 Heavy what is your status? Grafton please respond." Command radioed.
"The Grafton is dust! As we'll be if we don't get out of here!" Carter said.
"All units, fall back!" Command issued the order out, "Find shelter before they start glassing the area!"
"Oh giant sour grapes!" Nick stumbled as a gigantic Covenant Supercarrier cast it's shadow over the land.....
