You're American, and living in japan? That's very cool, that you've managed to live in another country!

Yup, and itβs been a challenge, thatβs for sure! But I prefer life to be challenging, so Iβve enjoyed my time here so far

What kind of job do you have there? If my memory serves me right, unless married to a Japanese, there's not many jobs to do. I'm always curious how foreigners manage to do well in my homeland given this!Β

Iβm working as an English teacher for the JET Program! Yes, itβs generally hard to find jobs in Japan unless you teach English or speak fluent Japanese. Many people who start out teaching English move on to other jobs after that, since thatβs the easiest way to get a first job in Japan.

It's nothing. Btw, how did you manage to live here? Through work study? I'd like to maybe one day move to another country, so I'm a bit curious how the process works.

No, I got here through being hired as an English teacher. The JET Program hires people from all over the world to teach English in Japan, and when you first get hired, they help you do all the paperwork and everything so that you have all the documents you need to move to and live in Japan. I have a work visa
The process to get to another country depends on where you wanna go and what you wanna do. If you want to work, itβs usually a lot harder to go than if you wanted to go study. Student visas are pretty easy to get, especially if you get them through your university in a study abroad program.

That's very interesting. Do you like living in Japan? Our cultures can be different. How's the food? Do you keep eating western food everyday or have switched to a more estern diet?
At least it's easy to visit Russia.

I do like living here for now, but I donβt think I personally would be happy living here long term. Iβm too American to fit in with most Japanese people, and I donβt like how much I stick out physically - as an introvert, I prefer to feel more integrated, more anonymous I do love the food here though! I tend to cook mostly western food for myself, but when I eat out and when I eat lunch at my schools, I eat mostly Japanese food. So I guess you could say my diet is about half and half now.
Thatβs good! Have you been there before?

I'm Japanese, so you could say I"ve been in Japan before. I see... that's understandable. I've even heard of some foreigners even being stopped by locals for the locals to take photoes with them. Also, the laws are very unsupportive of child rearing.
One benefit of being a teacher is that you can travel to many places. One of my teachers lived in France and Russia for a time, thanks to some program of work for teachers.

Yes, that does happen sometimes. itβs never happened to me, but I do get a LOT of stares, and many people will stop to watch me as I walk by them. Itβs really uncomfortable... And youβre right, the laws for women in general here are very frustrating.Β
True! If they donβt mind not being able to speak the language of the country theyβre going to then yes, itβs great that they can travel. I prefer to be able to speak the language though, so at least as a teacher, I would only want to work in countries where I speak the language.

Personally, if I had the opportunity to work at a foreign country, I wouldn't whether or not I speak the language.Β
