You are so welcome my friend. It's funny you know... I was telling my wife about you a few minutes ago. Even if we don't know each other per say, I can feel a mutual respect for one and others work. Also, you are such a gentleman which is a rare species nowadays. I'm happy to count you as a friend and to follow your amazing work. It's a true pleasure.

Kindest regards and please, keep up the amazing work!

Your friend from across the big pond.

Apocalypse2011 [2011-04-13 00:37:20 +0000 UTC]

How well does the 18-55mm DX nikkor lens work for portraits? I have a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm Nikkor thats 3.5-5.6 G VR and have been having trouble pinpointing the optimal distance for portraits.

Instant-Ocean In reply to Apocalypse2011 [2011-04-13 01:33:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, we are talking about your basic kit lens. Nevertheless, it's a Nikon lens, so it's not a cheap lens. I think the real issue here is not really the distance from subject but rather the F stop you use vs the lighting. A lot of people will drool, including myself, on the 24-70mm F2.8 Nikkor VRII lens tha sells for a little over $2K. It's not really the fact that you can take a picture at F2,8 @ 70mm that is really a factor but the fact that it's a fast lens. Also and most of all, it's a very sharp lens. Does that mean that you cannot get the same or similar sharpness from a regular Nikkor lens: no! Let's go back to the basics if you will and I think that might be helpful:

First of all, in ANY lens, the sharpest point is smack in the middle. So do not use anything else than a single point focus locked in the middle for portrait. The technique is quite simple: First, establish focus on one of the eyes, then you move your camera to re-frame, then take the picture. Secondly, most lens are manufactured to deliver optimal sharpness between F8 and F11. So, you need to set your camera (provided you have the proper lighting equipment that will allow use of such small appertures) around those settings. Does that mean you cannot take a shot at F5.6? No! You can. But make no mistake... if using F8 demands you to bump up your ISO to 800.... consider shooting with a bigger apperture. You will, even if Nikon is very good at higher ISO, introduce some noise into the picture. Try to avoid it if you can.

Believe me, you can do good portraits with the lens you have. In fact, in a lot of portraits that I do, I use a very similar lens, just larger. I have an 18-200 F3.5 - F5.6 VR. So it's only a bit longer but that's it. So if I can do it, so can you. The only difference is the light. Photography is painting with light and you def need to invest in lighting equipment if you wish to do any studio photography. The worst thing you can use is the on-board pop-up flash... That is horrible! You need at lest one or 2 off camera flashes. No need to buy the flagship of Nikon (the SB-900). You can easily work and produce good shots using the half-priced SB-600 which is discontinued and will be replaced soon by the SB-700.... so they are at bargain prices now. This is the time to buy some!

That's about it for now. If you have a more precise question, please feel free to ask and it will be my pleasure to try to give an answer or some pointers or even point you to others that know more than me.

Kindest regards,

Instant-Ocean

PS: Try to avoid being too close to your model... you get lens distortion then, depending on the angle.... Use the zoom, even if it's limited in your case. Most of all, avoid at all cost smack in your face, full front pictures.... They usually never work. Search and find the angle! Any model has a better profile side... just find it and use it.

So get on the program and share llamas... don't thank for them.

Thank you and God bless dA for that insane, ridiculous llama badge idea!

Look at one of your pictures. Now, scroll down and look on the right side... you will find some information pertaining to the picture... and Camera Data, which is the meta-data that you camera generates. There you have it all... and I'm no magician or camera wizard! LOL This data can be useful to you in terms of how you setup your shots. It's really helpful info.

I had a Panasonic DMC FZ-18 which I kept for about 6 months. After that, I bought my present camera which is a Nikon D300 with a bunch of lens and stuff. You can see what I have on my front page, on the right side, in Tools of the Trade.

Have a great day!
