Hmmm. A little disturbing, your work. Technically skilled, yet quite dark in content. No harm intended, just an observation. Best Wishes.

I'm trying so hard to find artclasses, but it seems that most talented people are self taught.

Scosglen! Hey! Scosglen! What's up.
Hey, look you're really awesome, so I'm watching you.
On a serious note, how much has life drawing helped you? I don't do any at all because I reeeeeeaally suck at it, but if it really helps, I want to start.

It really helps. I don't do it much these days since I've been focusing hard on figurative work and getting a model to work from isn't very convenient right now, but if I had the opportunity I would always work from life over copy.

I was talking about imagination v. life for learning. I always draw from imagination. It's led to some problems, though- I can't replicate faces, or anything for that matter. Does life drawing help with that? I know it seems obvious, but I've been dead wrong about that sort of thing before.

Jayto In reply to BigYellowBird [2008-02-03 09:13:12 +0000 UTC]
Do you mean replicate, as in keep them consistant amongst multiple drawings, or more as in achieving an accurate likeness such as in portraiture?
If it's the latter, life-drawing is absolutely fundamental in honing your observational skills. You develop a better internal meter for judging relationships, structure, and proportions, and will no doubt pick up many pragmatic 'tricks' for achieving accurate results as well--employing plumb lines or measuring distances with a pencil at arm's length for instance.

I meant the consistency among multiple drawings. I don't know, I just can't do it- especially something like a face.
Alright, I'm going to start drawing from life, but does this mean I should put the imaginative stuff on hold? I have a hundred different ideas begging to be put on paper. Then again, I guess that doesn't mean much if I don't have the skill necessary to transcribe them.
