It seems to me that most of your stuff with less point-of-reference has better proportions, movement, and a higher quality overall. Here's hoping you go with more impromptu portraits and people and less celebrity study.

Well, it seems like your celebrity stuff is mimicking a picture you're looking at or building from some point of reference. Furthermore, since we're familiar with a lot of these people, we all have an ingrained point of reference for them--we know exactly, in our minds, what they look like. As a result, a painstaking replication of that still is likely to look "off" or wrong in some way. We try to make our drawings look "right," and a certain expression and creativity is sacrificed.
When working with unknowns, or just off the top of the head, or with ourselves (as we've all got pretty good ideas of what we look like--even more, we tend to project our own features into others we draw) there's less pressure to make it look "right" in terms of likeness and more room for expression, style, form, etc. You capture the "feel" of people that I've never seen before, but a lot of your celebrity studies lack that individualized expression and become a bit flat and lifeless.
Take, for instance, Jessica ([link] ) and Adm. Kirk ([link] ). Both of these drawings have their flaws--eye and brow alignment, in particular--but Jessica seems more "real," because we see the idea of her despite the minor flaws in rendering.
With Shatner, who we all know and love, those same flaws become glaring and disrupt that sense of connection--we instinctively know something is wrong because we've seen it so many times before. So we wind up sort of in "uncanny valley" territory, and the overall effort suffers for it.

ive studied bridgman and loomis and have gone to schools that push that structure and form are important for a good pic. thanks

Ok so good books Bridgman you already know. Loomis any from him such as figure drawing for all its worth. any books by Rockwell are good to look at. Other guys that are awesome Mau-Kun Yim new language of drawing and complete guide to drawing the head.Repin and other russian artists aways good to check out. John Singer Sargent guy is amazing. Mucha, and Fechin and another great illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. hope this gets ya started it really helps to try and draw from life Ive been out of the loop on that but will start up again soon. I always fails at portraits of real people, I draw manga ^^,
and your shadowing is also good.. I usually suck at shadowing and manga shadowing is much easier than irl people shadowing

Thanks! For years I drew in a more comic book style until I took a drawing class at college. I felt I was incapable of shadowing and never tried it.
